Lately, the Smiths have become a staple of my music listening. They're great. While some of their guitar melodies are a little generic, the combination of the guitar and the vocals make up for it. I just got The Queen is Dead the other day, only to confirm something I had been thinking about for a couple months. Morrissey, the lead singer of the Smiths, is one of my favorite vocalists at the moment. He's definitely in the top three, if not the absolute peak. His vocal stylings and melodies are unlike anything I've ever heard before. Although he doesn't sing in a conventionally beautiful style, Morrissey never fails to astound me with his singing style. It's amazing how he can go from crooning one second to a high-pitched tone the next. 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' is a good example of this. Morrissey's style isn't the only aspect of his singing that I love. I also think that him and Johnny Marr were a great songwriting team and came up with some ingenious melodies. There is such friction between the guitar and the vocals. Those two factions of the band never sound similar to one another, which is one of the main reasons why I enjoy this band so much. I find myself singing along with the Smiths much of the time I listen to them. Whether he is a good person or not (I'm not sure of that), I think that Morrissey is quite an amazing musician.
Morrissey is THE man, thats a fact. I've never heard anyone argue otherwise... His vocals on Hang The DJ make me chuckle everytime hehe...
He is a brilliant lyricist. He seems to be someone who has the knack of being able to articulate meaning in such a simple, perfect way.
