i've had mono off an on for about 3 months but for the past 2 weeks ive been down with it. It's gotten better but im still fatigued and feeling sick when I'm not on Tylenol or Ibprofen. I'm on them almost 24/7 and my mom said that was bad for my liver. I also developed strep throat about 3 days ago and got some antibiotics from the doctor but it feels like it's done absolutely nothing. Can someone please help me?? I wanna get better! Thank you. Peace!
wow.. I'm sorry to hear that you are in such a condition. I just thought I'd post to say I hope you get better soon. I don't really know what to say to you, as I've never had mono before (thank god). The only thing I can tell you is, You're mom is right taking all that Tylenol & Ibuprofin is very bad for your liver and If you got the antibiotics from your doc then you should take them till they're gone. If they don't work, then go back and get something else.. Hope this helps some? Take care.
ohhh how i sympathize for you... i'm so sorry to hear about mono. i had it when i was18 and missed a bunch of my grad stuff.. it put me out for 3 months, all of which were almost unbearably painful for me as i also had strep as well as a throat/nose infection. this is insane considering i'm otherwise extremely healthy. the only way they got rid of it for me was to eventually give me these injections of a certain steroid at the emergency ward in the hospital.. where i wound up once i lost about 25 pounds and was too weak to lift my head.. my doctor held off on this for a while to see if anythign else would work but it didn't.. so maybe this could be a last resort for you too.. i hope you feel better..!
What helped me more than anything was rest. I was able to find out I had it early though. A bunch or friends and I were all passing a .... well, you know... and I found out that one of them had it. Awhile later I started to feel kind of crappy and figured thats what I had, went to the doc, got tested and it came positive for mono. I wasent to bad yet and they told me to stay home from work and school about 2 weeks, drink lots of juice, water, chicken soup, etc. and then see how I feel. After 2 weeks I was fine, the only thing I had was achy joints, swollen nodes, and could never get enough sleep. So I would reccomend that. My friend Mike on the other hand, figured that with time off from school he should party it up, after a week of smoking like a chimmny and little sleep he was a mess, took him 3 months to get over it and he lost 50 lbs! It hits everyone a little different but the only thing I can figure out is that when the doc says rest and fluids they really really mean it.
Awww. But yeah, there isn't a ton you can do. Do be sure to finish up the entire prescription of antibiotics, since it might take a little longer than usual for your body to fight stuff off since you already have mono. As long as you don't overdose on them, ibuprofen and tylenol are very safe drugs. Tylenol is more of a liver issue -- the big concern with ibuprofen is stomach irritation, and if you're holding up okay with that, you could always just use the ibuprofen more regularly and cut back on tylenol for concern for your liver. The best things you can do is sleep as much as your body wants, and stay hydrated. But yeah, beyond that... not much else. Mono sucks, big time, and it's slow as all hell, which makes it all the more miserable. Hang in there!
AHH I am so sorry! Mono sucks! I had mono last year and ended up in the hospital with liver failure, partially because the virus attacked my liver and partially because I took so much damn tylenol. I got better really fast after being down for months by taking the advice of an alternative medicine nutritionist. I tool milk thistle for my liver, drank kombucha tea all the time, ate mostly fruits and veggies and took loads of vitamins. The other important thing is I made sure I got 10 hours of sleep a night until I felt better. For the pain I got fiorcet (usually for migraines but has aspring instead of tylenol). tylenol wasn't enough for how bad my glands hurt. I feel for you. Just try to be as healthy as possible. Arghhhh ):
That's what happened to me! I had strep too so they never ran a mono test so after I was done with my anti-biotics. I drank and smoked and stayed up all night. I am just now feeling back to my old self after more than a year ):
First of all, you don't get mono on and off...it is a bacterial infection that stays with you until it is cleared out of your system. The tylenol can be a bit hard on your liver, so definitely try to switch it off with other NSAIDs (ie motrin) and see if your doctor can prescribe other medications to help. And with the antibiotics, no matter how you feel, just keep up with them until it is done...stopping them early can cause resistant strains of the bacteria which is definitely not good! As far as the mono, it sucks, but you just have to ride it out. Make sure to eat a balanced diet and try a multivitamin if you are not on them. I always make sure to take a One-a-Day and a Vitamin C every day, and it has drastically reduced the amount of times i've been sick recently!!! Hope you feel better soon!
