This is kinda sad, kids of today have NO IDEA what "good" sound is.......

Giving up my iPod for a Walkman

When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.

Im sorry but i wouldnt give a rats ass who thought what of what i had!!

I prefer QUALITY and Walkmans (ANALOG) produce much better quality than these digital pieces of crap!!

Hey, Scott, why not use that hip new thing called "Google" and check out some newer versions:

    No you have not.
You were given a machine that was decades old...obviously the sound isn't going to be so good.
If you want to compare the two technologies more fairly try comparing a cassette player that is less than a decade old.

    No they don't, sorry.

Don't get me wrong I loved my walkman cassette (actually, it was probably another brand - infact it might have been one of those multi-coloured players, can't remember).
I remember my first one (kinda).
    Good times.
But in comparison, the sound isn't quite as consistent.
It isn't quite as god awful as that article was pretending it was (using a stupid naive child and an ancient version) but I still prefer a half decent mp3 player. It's easier to use too.

I think my parents had similar versions for the home (as apposed to walking around the streets with on on their shoulder). I remember my dad listening to one when he was fixing the car etc. Those were a little before my time. Only just.

I have two working walkmans, and I use them sometimes. My gf has an Ipod, it sounds good but i cant use the thing for nothing. a fucking circle that you gotta run your finger around and un navigatable menus. I probably looked like a retarded ape when I tried to figure out how to turn the damn thing off!

I bet an MP3 player that's not made by Apple would be way easier to use, but I use the radio tuner on the walkman more than the cassette player anyway. its good for many many hours. It's got a digital tuner that's pll quartz synthesized. you can't really get much better than that.

not if you had the ESP. but then it completely drained the battery by spinning the disc really fast. I've noticed all the cd walkmans they make now don't even have ESP

I was thinking about mini discs the other day. Those were awesome for their short existence. Unfortunately they didn't have the best selling strategy since basically you were just getting mini cdrs that you could constantly overwrite. But it was so easy to sneak one in and record concerts at a respectable quality and snag music off cd players and mp3 players.

I had one for years that could read MP3s and only skipped a couple times when hitting potholes while riding in cars (I live in Pittsburgh, our roads are swiss cheese), and I really don't remember changing the batteries.

This was when MP3 players were first coming out. And my CD player could fit more songs than most players

Compared to Vinyl records, Cassette tapes were a step backwards when it came to fidelity. Poor consistency of tape head alignment on the players often had you hearing a different mix on different decks.
For the first truly portable music, it was pretty fuckin' cool...I remember when the auto-reverse players came out. It was so awesome not to have to flip the tape over manually.:p
