I really believe that atheism is crippling its own belief with a label that directly relates to religion. By calling yourself an atheist and declaring that you do NOT believe in a god, by mind and title you are giving those beliefs validation in that they are a subject of interest rather than something not even worth talking about.
In support of your theory, I'm a Christian who often attends atheist meetings and participates in discussions on atheist websites (like this one) because I enjoy exchanging views with people who have a different take on a subject of common interest. To me, people--religious or irreligious-- who won't engage others in dialogue because they think they know it all, regard those of different beliefs as rubes not worth talking to, or who think that if only they refrain from talking about a different beleif system it will go away are anti-intellectual ignoramuses, whether theists or atheists.
I don't know what you are talking about. Could you explain like you are talking to a 10 year old, please.
Which one of us do you want to do that? Seems to me a ten year old ought to be able to understand these posts.
Either of you, tbh. This is what I interpreting it as, perhaps I'm right and then you won't have to bother: I'm an atheist. I do not believe in God. I must, therefore, have a myriad of beliefs to validate my atheistic "beliefs"...and they are: "a subject of interest rather than something not even worth talking about." ..then you say that if I don't talk about my myriad of "beliefs" I think I know it all and don't think you two (for e.g) are worth talking to...and I do so hoping "people like you" will go away quietly. I know for a fact I don't know everything and I know for a fact "people like you" will not go away. But at the end of the day, I don't have an awful lot to say about the matter. I just wanted to get what you guys were saying straight before I waded in with my size 9s. Perhaps I have more to say than I think.
I think there's a real communication problem here. I was responding to the OP, and you weren't in the picture until you asked us to explain our positions. I don't recall either of us saying anything about a myriad of beliefs. I certainly would never say that if you didn't talk about them you wouldn't be worth talking to. I think the OP was making the point that some of the new atheists, by making such a big deal about God, might actually be getting people interested in a subject "not even worth talking about." It was the "not even worth talking about" comment that I was reacting to. I didn't say anyone wasn't worth talking to--just the opposite. What is odd is that you personalized it all, when to my way of thinking none of it was about you.
I personalised it, because I was speaking as if you two were talking about me: An atheist. I was also trying to interprete what you both were saying. "I think the OP was making the point that some of the new atheists, by making such a big deal about God, might actually be getting people interested in a subject "not even worth talking about." " I can see what he means now. Thank You.
Good point. But, until theists are no longer the majority, I feel, it is a sacrifice that must be made.
do atheist .. say "oh gosh oh gosh" when getting filled with dick? . like I knew this chick right, shes all dont believe in GOD kind shit, but when I was fucking her she was "oh god oh god" I guess when I said "I thought you didnt believe in GOD", she fell silent didnt bring up the not believing in GOD stuff anymore.. Still "oh god oh god" when getting filled up... brings me to another question.. While watching a game show staring children moslty doing obstacle course , I notice than when the children are in danger of falling or losing grip.. They begin to say "oh my gosh oh my gosh".. not only one child but many have I noticed in the show repeating the same phrase and actually catching themselves not to Say the GOD word, Should i stumble on this game again, Ill make note of it, and tell you what it is..
Many shows tell people not to or are not scripted with the words: "Oh God" so that they can have a G rating. I guess it is a good thing. Hand on heart I don't. Ask Glen Glen.
I see how the original post would lead people to believe this is about exchanging information but that really isn't the case. It is about an intellectual position that is completely unnecessary. So you don't believe in god....So what The only rhetoric that stems from an "Atheist" position is why, and how god doesn't exist. Why would you fill your drinking cup with water you aren't going to drink. I understand and realize that atheism is often a component to something more than the denial of god, but do those people usually call themselves atheists? why would they? how many words are we going to create for shit we don't believe. I agree with this. My favorite book used to be "Ayn rand - Anthem" It is, without a doubt, the biggest misrepresentation of unity you will ever read. I say this because we are in agreement that the ego is the source of the problem in this case, and as i have observed, many, many others. Now im not one to say that i don't have an ego, because i'm forcefully reminded of it every time i type "I", but i do know what its like to not have one, and that's when I learn.
Heeh: Not necessarily. Not believing in god, If I was to be asked if I believe in god, the simple answer is no. If we can't expect people of our understanding to share it, why share anything at all? This is all about taste in language, which is why I always stress the point. I have never found the religious with a genuine desire for eternity. I am not against this. If they would prefer a 'legacy' I am for letting them feel entitled to it if that pleases. Let it be said though, I do hope that people of any position will want to join me! LOL Chapter13 Some, yes. Most however are open to reason. Atheists, on the whole, want to free language. It's because at bottom we manage to grant that we are free to ourselves and eachother.
When they come to my door, they usually ask if I am aware that Jesus Christ died for my sins....which pretty much checkmates all my responses. still trying to think of something funny to do to when they come.
How is it anymore unnecessary than calling yourself a theist or a Christian? A Christian calls themselves so because they want it to be clear what they believe. For an atheist; it's the same thing. Just like how the word illiterate means "not able to read"; atheist, describes the position of being a non-believer. Surely, reading is not the most historically 'natural' human ability -- yet, we refer to the non-literate in a negative sense -- as if they are lame (which gets referred to in a stand-alone sense, despite it being the lack of an ability). How are atheists to blame, for the language that we all (as Westerners) speak?
I think all athiesm is just dramatic bull lol. Kinda like religion, but religions at least more... structured, and has benefits of hope... and war. Saying your atheist is sad in my opinion. No hope or beliefs. Just a closed mind. I'm a 16yr old stoner though lol I got a lot to learn.
Of course atheists have hopes and beliefs -- they can even have spirituality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptwEV0xhTzI"]YouTube- What can an atheist possibly celebrate? Personally, I identify more as an agnostic than atheist-- but I damned sure don't believe in any of the gods of organized religion. That doesn't mean I can't disagree with modern science's complete out ruling of anything phenomenal.
If by structured, you mean lots of mythology, and if by hope, you mean false hope for those that follow the rules layed down by manipulative religious leaders, then yeah. well.. You have the understanding that there aren't 40 virgins waiting for you after you bomb the towers, and that this is the only life you've got and you have to live it to the fullest. and as to the closed mind thing...it's the same wherever you go. everyone thinks their right, whether you think theres a god, or you think theres no god, or you think it's not posible to know if theres a god, you still think you're right and everyone else is wrong. (note: this post doesn't apply to the less insane religious individuals that make up much of this site. You know who you are)
Ok. Structured dramatic bull? uh, ok... I believe you are confusing athiesm with literal nihlism. How is being an atheist label someone as having a closed mind? In the same reasoning could it not be said that the believer in there proclimation of certainy of a creator be said to have a closed mind to the idea of a natural universe? I agree.
