    so i've been told i need to choose a shakespear play to read and i don't know what to choose.....
    i've already read romeo and juliet, hamlet, and king lear

    i'm leaning towards a midsummer night's dream or othello, but any suggestions would be nice
    thanks!

    "A midsummer night's dream" by far!

    I played Puck in a play and we were in tears throughout the rehearsals, its hilarious.

    Midsummer definitely. I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite play, to watch or to read - a good lighthearted dreamy sort of comedy, and a great introduction to Shakespeare. :)

    Yeah Midsummer Night's Dream was the first Shakespeare we read at my school, back in 7th grade...it was my favorite until I read Macbeth this year.

    hmm :) and who told you that you must read one? I ask only because I said this to an ex-gf only to be told that shakespeare was boring!

    seeing as u've read 3 tragedies already, if it hasn't put you off then othello is a logical follow on and it is a masterful play (even if I do prefer the Verdi opera but that's an aside) :).

    however, shakepeare wrote some wonderful comedies as well. midsummer night's dream is a delightful play to be sure but if you were to ask me which comedy to read first I would suggest two gentlemen of verona.

    why? well it is full of lovely monologues and quotable quotes. my favorite since I first read it must be this - That man that hath a tongue, I say, is no man, if with his tongue he cannot win a woman. that as an impressionable teen left me trying to woo the ladies with words (only to bore them to tears I suspect!).

    another favorite verse would be this

    What light is light, if Silvia be not seen?
    What joy is joy, if Silvia be not by?
    Unless it be to think that she is by
    And feed upon the shadow of perfection
    Except I be by Silvia in the night,
    There is no music in the nightingale;
    Unless I look on Silvia in the day,
    There is no day for me to look upon;

    or this one

    O, how this spring of love resembleth

    The uncertain glory of an April day,

    Which now shows all the beauty of the sun,

    And by and by a cloud takes all away!

    now I know that some would say two gentlemen is not one of shakepeare's finer works and that the characters contradict themselves and has really stupid puns. however bearing in mind it's one of his earliest works, it provides a wonderful framework to see how he polished his art and there are some lovely bits. (then again even the poorest shakespeare play is better written then some of the stuff that passes for plays by anyone else!)

    anyway, don't mean to bore. I love shakespeare's comedies though the tragedies run them very close and to an extent it depends on my mood :). enjoy the plays :).
