I would post this in the 'meditation forum' but all of you are always helpful, so I thought I'd see what I could get here. I meditate. I do the simple, half lotus, focus on your breathing meditation. But, I'm wondering about all the different kinds of meditation, there seems to be so many, and I'd like to know the different forms of meditation, different strategies and such..
i meditated once... but i dont hink i did it right.what is a lotus? i have heard of it before... like in books and online and stuff.but is it a flower? and were do u get it. what does it do?
meditating can do amazing things. the one thing ive always thought was a little flawed in the whole traditional meditation teachings is your sitting really intently when you go to meditate. you say okay, im gonna go do this certain practice, and achieve this certain goal. but i think you have to be open to the TONS of different things the universe has to offer...its like trying to take control of things, which is good to an extent, but we dont control EVERYTHING you know? were apart of a much greater whole, and we only "own" a small piece of it, if we even own it. but meditating can be done in numerous different ways like you said, and every person is gonna have a way that works best for them and is completley individual to them. you can have one technique and have 100 people try this technique and have 100 different results occur is what im trying to say. i have to say, the most spiritual experiences i have ever experienced were not planned in the slightest, they just happened. i got that intuition and feeling and i followed my heart and it took me where i needed to go, which can be ANYWHERE. were all on different paths with SO many different possibilities, and no one can tell you what your path is or what you need to do. they can help you see it, but ultimatley its you who says what you need to do or where you go. meditating is AMAZING, definatley suggest you all look into it, very beneficial, and has the potential to change lives and can really show you whats REALLY going on in the world and in your life and within yourself, which is what life is about imo, learning and growing and bettering oneself and bettering the world.
I practice Vipassana as I was taught by assistant teachers to S.N. Goenka. If you can get away for ten days, I highly recommend taking one of their courses (dhamma.org). I don't worry about posture much, although I'm generally more comfortable in a kneeling position. In addition to sitting Vipassana an hour in the morning and at night, I practice anapana meditation throughout the day (when I'm driving or doing anything else that doesn't require much focused thought).
