I stopped trying to meditate a few years ago due to a few things distracting me in my life att, but now i am starting to practice again. I hear people talking about meditation and how they see things and are relaxed and think 'cool thoughts' etc, but none of them seem to reflect one profound experience I had a few years ago which i believe was my only ever successful session. as usual, my sessions would begin at first light. I would sit there and count my breathing, up to ten, then repeat for 5-10 mins. I had been doing this for months when one morning it changed. I felt a lightness in my body as it disappeared from my reality. My head, consciousness, whatever you want to call it, opened up into what seems an eternal vastness...an emptiness but an empiness full of bliss and oneness. I dont remember how I cam out of it but I did pretty quickly. The entire time, which only lasted probably 5-10 minutes, i could hear cars etc in the distance, but as a faraway thing and not as part of my world. my question is, is this meditation how it is supposed to be? or is it one of many forms of meditation and if so, a basic form or a high spiritual state?
meditation can be anything you want it to be.. there are different feelings and forms the idea is to be present
The mind is the 'muscle' we exercise with meditation. There is no expectation of where the mind will take us. Just allow it to 'play' and listen, be aware but try not to judge. Very difficult! Fear often prevents us from following where the mind wants to go so learn how to use that fear rather than fearing the fear
I agree with running bear and dazed gypsy. Also, forget about ''a hight spritual state''. Try to cultivate the attitude that you do NOT know how meditation is supposed to be, you are here to discover it, play with it. Be willing to be in awe.
Meditation is the practice of calming your mind ;-) The one! meditation that you mentioned as a successful meditation; Seams to describe a insight into the experince of enlightenment. Life offered you a taste of total blizz! your true self. This should be an appetizer for more practice ;-). Dont judge your meditations or your self, every meditation is a good meditation with different sensations and experiences. Enjoy it! Namaste.
