I love the taste of it, but I want to stop eating it (or at least cut down) and need some help from any other veggies.

I know it isn't healthy and I know the way meat is produced in this country and the methods involved. Especially the type of junk food crap that goes into my system.

I'm not against meat eating on a survival level either, I know that human beings are animals with sharp teeth designed for being carnivorous. However I am against uneccessary cruelty in the meat industry.

But I just can't seem to be able to go for more than a couple of weeks without getting tempted by a burger or bacon sarnie and then I'm back to square one ...

    How do I discipline myself?

learn to enjoy vegetarian food :)

and i don't mean bean/chickpea mash, that basicly looks like gloop....you can have a damn nice meal without meat

if you like junk food, why not have chips without the burgers? and have you tried deep fried veg? OH MY!!! soooo good and tempting, they're usualy at festivals, me thinks im gonna gain some weight at beautiful days :( tehehe

and you should stop seeing it as a challenge or a chore, if you want to do it then do it! if you're finding it really hard just cut down by finding out how much meat you eat, and then slowly rationing it (like 3 meals a month, then 2...etc etc)

anyways, not sure how much this'll help, but here's to healthy eating!

I believe it was Paul Mc Cartney that said " the world would be vegetarian if slaughterhouses had glass walls". With that said, go visit a slaughterhouse. That should cure you from eating meat for a while if not forever.

Well the people who work in slaughter houses seem to be ok with eating meat. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm happy to eat it.

I'm not fond of nasty greasy food, but if meat is prepared properly then I'll have it. Sometimes i'll have the cheap and nasty stuff if I'm drunk and need some grease in me to soak up the alcohol though. Or if I'm really starving and can't stop thinking about finding a kebab.

How is the meat cheap and nasty? Does the cow wear rouge and share needles with the other cows? lol

Lol, the meat is prepared badly in an inexpensive way and is therefore unhealthy.

There are so many amazing meat substitutes out there. If you want a burger, a real meaty tasting one, look for Quorn burgers or other meat substitute ones, they taste so like meat is amazing (I think they taste better then meat, and you feel less guilty!). Quorn make just about any type of meat...bacon...lamb chops...sausages etc etc. If you're not into veggie burgers and stuff then these are perfect.
People always pressume that veggie stuff is tasteless but I think you really begin to appreciate good food when you cut out the meat and meat by-products.
Turning veggie is difficult, but after a while you stop thinking about it. Everyone makes mistakes, so don't give up if you eat a bit of meat without thinking. Perserverence is the key :)
Good luck...it may be hard but its worth it :)

I know a cure for what ails you. Read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclare. There is a story about this book that after President Roosevelt read it, he wouldn't eat meat for a while.

    *cries*

there's beef gelatin in pop tarts :(

Anywhoo, the first week or two is the worst, but even that was easy for me. just the smell of meat makes me feel ill.

I dont really even like quorn to be honest. i know its only mushrooms and stuff, but it still looks like meat and when you chew it it feels like meat. although i ate it so as not to offend my grandmother.vegeburgers and vegesausages are sooooo nice though :p the ones with real vegetables, not mushy quorn.

anyways, aside from visiting a slaughterhouse, i would just say look out for tasty vegetable alternatives when you go food shopping and bypass the meat aisle. you're palette will adjust to the meatless diet and soon you wont be craving it anymore. just stick it out. buy a vegetarian cookbook? someone gave me one of them yesterday. hahahaha. i think it was as a joke but it was sweet of them :)

good luck. try the vegetarian forum too.

Not strictly true. Humans are omnivorous scavengers by nature. That being said though, we should be goverened by our sense of morality - not our biological history. We're also equipped to kill each other, but presumably we all realise that that's not generally a good idea......

I can't offer much advice really, because I never found it difficult to give up meat. Maybe you should try indulging all your other favourite foods? Or maybe set yourself smaller targets, like staying veggie at home, but allowing yourself meat when you eat out? Might be easier if you take it in smaller steps.

    Hey, I just noticed...... you're a dick, aren't you?

Quorn do a great bacon substitute, I'm a meat eater myself so I can tell you that the taste is great but the texture is a bit off. Still, it makes for a brilliant bacon sarnie.

While I am a meat eater I rarely actually eat meat, the way I've got there (not that I'm really trying to be veggie though) is by only eating well prepared free range meat from a local butcher, it tastes so much better that you'll turn your nose up at normal meat pretty quickly! You'd still have a way to go to being a veggie but at least you'd be starting to pander to your morality in 2 ways, 1: you'd eat less meat. 2: you'd be eating meat that had had a better life/death. Possibly a good starting block but then I've never wanted to go veggie so beyond that I couldn't say...

I don't know if I could be a vegetarian. I gave up soda (this is my eighth month with out carbonated beverages) so I guess I could give up meat just as easily.

More like another typical carnivore setting out to be offensive for the sake of it. Here's an idea..... you stop being a twat, and I'll lighten up, ok?
