While we argue about political correctness, whether Trump out loud referred to shithole nations as shithole nations or what is probably now going to be referred to as the #metoo generation In India, they are going nuts over a rumoured scene (which actually doesnt exist) in an upcoming movie where a Muslim, yes I said Muslim, King dreams about getting busy with a female from a high caste who represents virtue 100 ladies from that caste, yes, they still have castes, have threatened to set themselves on fire if the film is released http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-42048512 Imagine if this kind of thing happened in the US or UK, a film with some muslim guy dreaming about getting it on with say Mary Todd Lincoln or Maggie Thatcher. Would anyone be able to complain about it without being called islamophobic
The caste system makes India a very different society. If viewed from ours it may seem puzzling why esp these lower castes (sp?) don't rally for some equality. I mean they often don't have shit and seem to accept it in every day life, yet some threaten to set themselves on fire for something like a dubious movie scene.
Lol I see the ones who threaten to set themselves on fire are from a high caste. Luxury lifes means trouble sorting priorities? Probably inspired by monks with noble principes. I say burn yourselfs alright! Seems like an idle threat
It was this along with another story today, Chinese government set to introduce a social credit system by 2020.....which is really in the end just going to be a pseudo caste system.....all made me think, wow , we in the West really havent been paying attention
The Chinese actually never had real equality, despite their communist detour last century. Hong Kong has more selfmade millionaires than America. But on the other hand more chinese have been lifted from poverty in the last few decades than ever before. The average life standard is still increasing. I don't think we can state 'the west' as a whole has been oblivious to that, mainly a certain kind of westerner.
At one point in time India was on my bucket list , I guess I was thinking it would be all Eat, Pray, Love yoga retreats and enlightenment and shit But it really is a fucked up place, I really have no desire to go anymore. It was the rape culture that did it for me but the caste system is pretty ridiculous too Meanwhile these women are threatening to set themselves on fire over being fetishized while women from lower castes in rural India have to go 12 plus hours without going to the bathroom because they dont have access to private restrooms and squatting to use the restroom in broad daylight makes them vulnerable to sexual assault Western nations have their problems too though
So, it violates the sovereignty of their caste. I don't agree with the caste system at all, personally. Gandhi was against the caste system, so I follow suit. ... and it goes on. Mahatma Gandhi Views on Caste System I think that the people of the caste system have a hierarchical stratification dilemma. I remember bits and parts of a discussion we had on this in Cultural Anthropology (which tipically tries to be the opposite of ethnocentric, but I can't think of the word right now) in which we learned that the upper castes enjoy a sort of privilege and the lower castes are sort of demonized. Anyway...
there is seriously more then one cultural way of looking at anything. in some parts of the world people still have to deal every day with real life.
