I dreamt that my brothers and sisters chipped in and bought me a monkey for Christmas. Our parents gave me a pair of matching fur coats--one for my monkey and one for me.

In this dream, I was living in the city where I was born and where most of my family still lives. I remember going on the subway and to the cinema with the monkey, and I had taught the monkey how to fix Kraft Dinner for me.

I woke up from this dream happy and smiling. In waking life, I have no desire for a monkey. I've certainly wanted to be able to move back to the city where my family is, but I'm not sure that this is what the dream means.

    What do you think?

If you've read my monkey story--you'll leave it a dream!

I think the monkey represents an underdeveloped "wild" side of your personality that you need to recognize in yourself.
And why would I say that [climbs onto soapbox]:
(My personal and fully biased opinion from me, a random guy from the internet with no actual knowledge of psychology)
Dreams are IMO an "inner fiction" communicated in the same cultural language as movies, fantasy literature, folk myths and the like. Cultural behaviour and expressions are products of dreams just like dreams are products of cultural behaviour. This is why common symbolism used in literature analysis do apply to dream interpretation - nothing mystical, just intuition.[climbs down from soapbox]
The movie (and childrens books) I associated your dream to is (and sorry about it) Curious George.
The easy interpretation for this movie (and many like it) is that the main character who leads a dull and organized life cannot evolve as he lacks a creative and spontaneous side to him that needs to be developed before he can be successful in his job and get the girl of his dreams. Curious George represents this side of him, and after rejecting it and losing contact with it numerous times the two sides of his personality finally merge. (Watch it, or another childrens movie, if you don't believe me)
In regards to your dream, your family probably expect you to be in balance with yourself as they relate to both your "you" self and your "monkey" self by buying matching coats for both your selves in the dream. You may be in a time of your life where you feel you are not fun to be around and lacking of ideas and spontaniety and you may feel that you let those down who needs that from you.
Did a change in this regards happen when you moved from your home city perhaps? Did you suddenly (or gradually) become very predictable compared to the way you were before?
Anyways, I may of course be dead wrong, especially considering your various interpretations here. I hope it was fun reading at least.

Hmmm....I moved away from my home city because of adoption, so I don't think there was really a change in that regard; I was an infant.

My younger brothers are a bit more timid than I am, and maybe I bring out their inner monkeys. I try to balance both sides of my personality...lots of fun, but don't overspend and not be able to have fun.

You're hungry and want mac 'n cheese. buy a monkey and teach it, you'll be the happiest person in the world.
