Yeah Mayhem are one of the best bands of all time in my opinion. I didnt think their last album, Chimaira was a great album although I dont think it deserved as much stick as it got from some circles, I mean it isnt a bad album, just not a great one.
They did pioneering work in the then brand new black metal scene, and have some great songs. My definite favourite is Buried by time and dust. But all of De mysteriis is good, and I like Wolf's lair abyss quite a bit too.
Mayhem isn't my favourite black metal band, but i have great respect for what they did for the scene. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is my favourite Mayhem album.
I always get shit for saying it but I really do dislike Mayhem in general. There are a few songs that catch my ear but in general they tend to annoy the hell out of me... I am sure this is contributed in part to the hordes of mindless zombies they created though. I have a few friends that feel the need to shove Mayhem down my throat any chance they get.
Yeah, they're definitely not the best band IMO, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Emperor and Burzum are all better. By the way, forgot to mention, but I like their live work too... Leipzig, Mediolanum, Dawn...
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, is at least in the top 5 black metal albums ever. MayheM also at least one of the top 5 black metal bands ever. I think all their work kicks ass. Here's a few fun facts: Wolfs Lair Abys and Grand Declaration of War form three parts of a concept album, representing past, present, and future. Listen to them back to back and you will hear that the last riff played on WLA is the same as the first riff played on GDW. Also, if you hold down rewind at the beginning GDW you will find a hidden track. The full lineup on De Mysteriis is: Attila Csihar - Vocals Euronymous - Guitar Snorre Ruch - Guitar Varg Vikernes - Bass Hellhammer - Drums
They took out Varg's bass when it was released, right? I prefer both Dead and Maniac over Attila. He sounds totally retarded. Which of course can also be considered a good thing... Chimera was supposed to be 'the present', then?
Euro's parents requested that Vargs bass be removed, and Hellhammer told them he removed it and played bass himself. In reality he just turned the bass down a little, and I heard he even admitted this in an intervview. No, chimera is not the third part, if you look on the back of GDW it says Part II and lists the first 4 songs and then says Part III and lists the second 4 songs.
