So I bought a mattress this past summer and it's already completely shot . I wake up every morning with a painful neck/back and don't sleep very soundly. I can't afford a whole new mattress right now and have been looking into buying a memory foam mattress topper. I have a few concerns with them: Some can cause you to overheat/aren't breathable Certain brands are expensive and I don't want to put money into another bad bed purchase Some people complain that they have a strong chemical smell I've read that they lose their firmness/springiness after a few months Does anyone have one? Do you like it or dislike it? How thick is it? What brand? Just looking for some opinions on which one to buy, there are so many and all of the reviews are mixed. I'm also open to alternative solutions.
Just a year and it's already shot? That seems premature... did you rotate and flip it at regular intervals? Some friends of mine recently bought a memory foam topper and they love it, but they did buy a more expensive one for some of the reasons you mentioned.
I used to have one and liked it just fine. We only had to get rid of it because when we went away for a couple nights a couple years ago my cats ended up locking themselves in there (they can shut the door and we forgot to put something heavy in front of it to prevent that...)---- and in any case, the cats were fine, the mattress and topper were not. Now we have a whole mattress that is foam and I like it a lot. We both do. Never smelled anything even remotely chemical w either one of them... also do not find it hot (either one of them)....
wow that's a lot of mattress acrobatic to wear one out in a year We bought a memory foam 2" topper from costco and used it for a few years tell we bought a new mattress. It helps to air it out for a few days outside before you put it on. I use on on the boat too with the bunk only 26" wide you tend to sleep in the same spot, I replace it every 2 or 3 years. I love them
Oh yes...Costco is where we got both the foam (2 inch) topper and the foam mattress itself. I don't remember the exact prices but I know they were not expensive.
I remember I was having neck pain and then I bought one of those My Pillows from the infomercial. omg. So comfy and I havn't had any neck pain since. Maybe you should try one of those pillows. I also bought my kids a new mattress a couple of days ago from Ikea. I fell asleep on it the other night, and actually don't even remember falling asleep, so it must be cloud-like. I didn't have high expectations for it because seems products from Ikea are made cheaply, but I'm hoping it lasts for a while. Maybe you could also look into an Ikea mattress since they have some that are inexpensive..cuz maybe you just need a different type of mattress. But mattress toppers, never used those. There's something else you can put on top of a mattress to make it comfortable but I'm forgetting what it's called...
Not even a year, we bought it in July! Two mistakes: 1. It was cheap to begin with 2. We had a house-guest who was very obese, and let him use our bed for 3 nights. Was not the same after that. Yes, we flipped/rotated it.
Rainy--the pillow thing seems like a good idea. My boyfriend bought one and it helped with the neck but he has back issues and he can't even sleep in the bed anymore it hurts him so bad. Orison--what is a moving quilt? I googled it but I'm not exactly sure.
i had a thick foam thing with cone shapes..threw it out in january because it started falling apart and damn i sure miss it...wish i had the cash flow to buy a real good mattress but i just cant right now
a few of them makes a soft topper down filled 5 star hunting sleeping bags are awesome too but expensive
I've never tried the memory foam mattress toppers (my bed is fanfuckingtastic so I'm fortunate enough to not need one at the moment) but I used one of those egg crate foam bed topper things when I had a not-so-comfy bed when I was a kid and it was pretty great. They're pretty cheap, so you could always try one of those and not be out too much money if it doesn't work for you
its a very thick blanket like material, but flat: harder like material wont sink as much, you double them up. put a fluffy quilt on top be like new bed. moving quilts will damper spring pokes too.. http://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/Protective-stuff/Quilted-Pads?id=3053
If I would only go by my own experiences I would definitely advise not to go for such an expensive brand. I built my own bed (with my brother), it has a bottom of planks and I bought an average priced mattress that I put directly on it (despite the advise of several people of put something in between because the mattress just laying on the planks would cause it to wear of sooner or something). I have never turned it around and it still sleeps great I understand this is of no help if you found out your average mattress sucks but if you don't feel like spending a lot of money on a brand mattress because of the reasons you gave in the OP (and if they hold any validity I would doubt as well) I'd seriously consider checking more average ones!
