People either made it out, or they didn’t’: Oakland officials fear dozens are dead in fire

OAKLAND, Calif. — California officials fear dozens may have died in a massive fire that swept through an Oakland warehouse where a concert was taking place Friday night.[/color]
Nine people have been confirmed dead, and dozens of others remain missing, officials said.

In a news conference Saturday, authorities said they expected the death toll to rise, but they did not know by how much. “We’re expecting the worst — maybe a couple dozen victims here,” Sgt. Ray Kelly, spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, told reporters.

“We did not have a lot of victims go to the hospital,” Kelly said. “It appears that people either made it out, or they didn’t make it out.”

For me personally this is reminiscent of the Station nightclub in West Warwick, R.I., on February 20, 2003
when 100 people lost their lives in a fire caused by the band Great White’s pyrotechnic display

I was hoping for a serious discussion on the subject not child-like banter

    Where's the childlike banter?

Here's your damn serious discussion. Ravers like to party in crappy abandoned buildings with no fire safety regulations. Those are considered to be the best raves. A big part of raver culture is ignoring fire regulations, or any other regulations...because they like unsanctioned parties where they can munch on exctacy and grind against each other without anyone bothering them. As a result, the places where they hold their raves are liable to catch on fire. That's exactly what just happened. You brought up fire code and regulation. Here's your damn answer. There wasn't any because these people purposefully look for places where they can ignore that kind of stuff. Hence, they're at fault.

Several hundred people died in car accidents throughout the country today. Hundreds more died from disease. Several tens were murdered. Yet, you don't care about any of these... but the second CNN throws some fire story at you with 9 death... it suddenly becomes a tragedy and anyone who tries to make light of the situation is branded an asshole and a child.

    To that I say:

    WANKERS

Hey I get it there were dozens of complaints from locals about the loud noise from previous concerts and just like you they're now happy, despite the massive loss of life - sigh

Good for the locals. I wouldn't want to live next to a rave warehouse either. Neither would you.

Also, 9 deaths is a rather miniscule loss of life. Nothing massive about it.

That entire place says "fire hazard", right next to where it says "douche hazard."

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean anyone deserved to die.

No one deserved to die... but they sure as hell didn't do anything to keep themselves from dying in a horrible fire by not exercising fire safety.

I don't deserve to die if I go running head-first into traffic... but I will, and I'd be a dumbass for doing it.

I'm not sure that dying while you're having fun is a bad way to go. I'd be OK with it.

I think the drugs might have helped with the pain bit (usually they die of smoke inhalation rather than actually burning).
But being burned to death in 5 minutes Vs dying of cancer over 2+ years ........ I'll take the flames.
