Masculinity

Hey all.

I had to watch a movie on men and masculinity in my victimology class today. It showed a lot of media images that influenced men negatively. It showed how men's bodies are getting larger and larger(muscle-wise) since the 1960's. Even in toys. It also showed the statistics of violence, the prison system,etc. It attributed a lot of this to movies,video games,etc. How men are taught to fit a certain accepted norm much like women are expected to through gender roles, body size, acceptable behavior. Otherwise, they were called fags, pussy's, mama's boys,etc. I realized a lot of what was said was relatable to guys in my life: my bf, friends. I was curious if you guys felt this way?

Yes. Girls can make out with each other... but guys get death threats if they do anything even kind of gay, but harmless.

I think gender roles are for the most part enforced by the own gender. There is a huge lack of assosciation between the two genders, and that has become a norm, even though it shouldn't be.

 

What the fuck? The second people in my school heard I was dating a girl I was getting beaten up and having guys wank over me in class whilst asking me about what my girlfriend and I did while we were together, along with the silly little things like name calling etc. Girls can only make out if they are obviously doing it for guy's attention. And rarely do guys doing something 'kind of gay' get death threats, they get a lot of insults, yes, but death threats, no.

I know girls who've made out, and not for guys attention. I was talking about in private, girls will make out with each other, or atleast not be opposed to the idea. Guys are completely opposed to the idea. I wasn't talking about in public, because gays never make out in public here. Its kind of a rant, where I wish things were different.

I've gotten threats that if I was to do something kind of gay, I'd be hurt extremely bad, and possibly killed, and those were from my friends, and people murder homosexuals.

I was talking about senarios in private, not out in the schoolyard.

If you do the things discussed in public, yes your right, but I was talking about in private situations, and forget to mention it.

So, neither of us are wrong.

Girls are accepting of the idea of making out, most of them anyway.

Guys however, seem to have this "antigay" frame of mind. Notice you said guys would wank over you and call you names.

I can't stand gender rolls. Probably because I defy the stereotypes ( I have muscle, am a bit dominant, DON'T SHAVE! ).
But to be honest, that's really more of an American thing. In Germany it's different. Girls don't need to shave ( even though many do ), guys don't need to be extremely muscular...( what's interesting I noticed is that in Germany it's really 'in' for women above their 20s to cut their hair short and style it with gel, then die it some color like red or whitish-blonde. While here you most likely will RARELY find that, only 'freaks'. ).
There metrosexuality is pretty much uncommon, here...gender rolls seem to be bigger..

I guess it has to do with the women's liberation which started WAY earlier there than here, causing cultural differences.

But yeah, if you ask me, it's a very American thing...

 

I like girls who are stronger than me actually, and I'm not ashamed of that. I don't like all those gender roles. When I hear a conservative talking about those antiquated things, I feel like kickin' up and boogin' him in the face.

yea, im a very skinny guy. couldnt kick anyones ass if i tried. doesnt bother me. i mean, if some dude started hitting me, ill hit back. im not just gonna crawl into a ball and just let him beat the crap outta me. you just gotta know the certain places to hit. like if its a serious fight, hit him in the nose. but ive never got into a fight cause i know id lose. but thats ok because guys who are all "if you cant fight your not a man" piss me off. and if some girls started making fun of my dick (hasnt happened, still a virgin.. ) id jut make fun of their boobs or something.

 

yea im quite scrawny myself, and i dont care. alot of girls here find smaller guys attractive, unless they are the girls that are all trailer trash skanks with "baby girl" in old english stikers on their cars.haha but yea girls are more accepted with "experimenting" with each other, where if a guy tried that hed prolly get the shit beat out of him

Men have gender roles just as much as women do. I don't believe in gender roles. Historically, women's gender roles would keep them down. Masculinity and feminity are stupid ass concepts and shouldn't exist.

Women are not more emotional than men. Part of men's masculinity gender role is to not show or talk about emotion. I envy the way girls can talk to their friends.

There are not more smart women than men. Under the current edjucational system and the way it fits in with the gender roles of society, females have an advantage.
BTW there are not more smart men than women either.

There are many other examples where people have been influenced to act a certain way (its fair to say women have more negative ones though).

I don't acknowledge masculinity or feminity because they don't exist. They are fabricated gender roles and people who believe in them are conservative, sexist, ignorant, or a combination of the three.

Gender rolls are only what you make of them.

 

I'm not into gender rolls. I much prefer buns.

 

It's kind of funny because where i am things are really backwards and it makes you realise why somethings are important, like there have been incidents of homosexual men beating up and raping "straighties"

Not that im saying the homosexual section is dominent but it makes you realise it doesnt really matter who you are some one is going to want to pick on you at some point. This is why it is useful for guys to be bulky and able to defend themselves and all that crap that is stereo typical.

 

I always thought straight men beat up and raped gay men. Maybe that's only prison...

I don't feel that way at all about what society calls
"Masculinity". How many of THOSE guys BEAT you or the otherside of the coin,
How many will cook for you or care for you if you're sick?
Only the individual can choose the definition I guess.
