It is a miracle that he could live that long, consuming too much cocaine.

It is because he was so good at playing football when he was young. Being a druggie or anything else do not change this fact.

I am a fan of both Diego Maradona and Lothar Matthaeus, whom Diego considered as his greatest rival. There was a great rivalry and friendship between the two, and Maradona tried to get Matthaeus to play in his club Napoli beside him, and went to the extent of offering huge bribes, which Matthaeus politely refused.

Lothar Matthaus: Diego Maradona was magic – we were World Cup rivals, but we became friends | FourFourTwo

There is a lot to learn from Maradona's life. He was a natural genius on the soccer field relying on his youth and natural gifts to excel. But as he aged, he became a shadow of his former self. His undisciplined life off the field and lack of mental equanimity also played havoc with his health.

Matthaeus on the other hand, relied on his calm analysis of the game, superb work ethics and disciplined lifestyle, to keep improving with age and experience, and was able to wrest the World Cup from Maradona's Argentina in the 1990 world cup final. Matthaeus is considered as the most complete midfielder in soccer by some analysts and was also noted for his fair play on the field, and is quite easily a better role model for the game than Maradona.

I think Pele was also less talented than Maradona but was able to make much better use of his talents than Maradona.

While I consider Pele and Matthaeus as better exemplars of sportsmanship than Maradona, I also consider Maradona as the greatest footballing artist ever. The way he skillfully dodged multiple clueless opponents to score goals is sheer magic, and for this reason his moves and goals was and is a part of every football connoisseur's diet.

Even now, I enjoy watching videos of Maradona's goals over anyone else.

Every time this thread comes to the front, I see "Madonna dies of heart attack..." for a split second.
