So people who like history often love maps, maybe more so than even their wife. Maps are awesome, and they tell the history of the world, either by looking at old maps, or using new maps to analyze history in politics, cultural, economic, whatever you want kind of ways. So post your favorite maps! First up, the Roman empire at its height around 120 A.D. The Roman empire due to its longevity and sheer size is probably one of, if not the most important eras of western civilization due to its impact. The Romans had a legal and political system highly advanced for its time that to this day form the basics of a good deal of the world's systems. It's sheer size and coherant political structures meant trade and ideas flourished over a vast area, especially during Pax Romana. (For reference the maps is actually wrong in saying the third century. This map shows Rome at its very greatest extent after conquering Mesopotamia and Dacia under Trajan around 117A.D. Those territories were only held for a few years before Hadrian(of Hadrian's Wall fame) withdrew from some areas to a more easily defendable border.
I have always had lots of interest in the pyramids in Egypt. These are just two simple maps, but none the less its very interesting. This one showing how the great pyramid is the center of all land mass on earth. Also how complex the pyramid is inside. I have been interested in Egypt for a long time. It just such a mystery once you start digging for information. images should work, let me know if they don't for you.
I think maps are awesome... especially old ones... I wouldn't say I have any favorites though... Although, in response to yours, I have an overwhelming desire to post these... lol A lot of those impacts that you say Rome had, we actually things that filtered through the mongol nation afterwords, and there is a lot of controversy over which (roman or mongol) should be attributed to them.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genghis_Khan_and_the_Making_of_the_Modern_World
Would you like to see Britannia rule again my friend? All you need to do is follow the worms! Not a bad for a little island especially considering an army marches on its stomach and the English cuisine is freakin terrible. No wonder they discovered curry and went "All in favor of making this our new national dish say aye"
Dead man walking, map of the death penalty around the world Blue - Not in penal code Green - Reserved for special circumstances Orange - In penal code but not carried out in past 10 years Red - In penal code and actively used.
Relief map of the Housotonic watershed And a map of southern New England circa 1811 The second one tells a story of border disputes to anyone familiar with the borders today.
Map of the Faerun... I spent a good 5 minutes trying to find Neverwinter. Theres a bigger copy than this where you can actually see the places but its too big for the site. And down on the left you see the Moonshae Isles. That is where the great town of Corwell is located.
