A 23 yr old British man died after ingesting and overdose of powdered caffeine bought online. Despite a warning on the package not to take more than 1/16th of a teaspoon, he ingested two spoonfuls of the powder and 15 minutes later he was sweating and vomiting. They say he ingested the equivalent of 70 energy drinks! The man's death was ruled an accident. http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/health/man-dies-of-caffeine-overdose-ncxdc-102910
Caffiene is a "hard" drug. It is addictive It is a powerful stimulant It can and does cause physical harm from abuse It obviously can be lethal What other criteria do you need to classify a substance as a "hard" drug? No offense to you gatsby, but I find that your comment typifies the popular concept that if a substance is legal, than it must be OK. More people die every year from tobacco and alcohol than any other "drug". It really is about time people stopped considering the legality of a substance in determining it's safety. Legality and safety have nothing whatsoever to do with each other, and safety is NOT the basis of the current drug laws.
i believe it! Isn't caffeine more active than methamphetamine by the milligram? It is a hardcore stimulant. Just drink a bunch of coffee/green tea/Monsters/sodas. Be sure to measure your blood pressure, heart rate and mental status BEFORE the consumption, then 20-30 minutes AFTER the consumption. Powerful stimulant that contributes to irritability, severe withdrawls, sleep disturbances and in the long term heart disease and high blood pressure IMHO. Fuck! i wish i could quit my physical and psychological addiction of this hardcore drug! i am such a hypocrite by saying i do not like stimulants when i dose with one every day (except for about 3 weeks) of my life! Drat!
thatd be a strange conversation friend: johns dead??!? omg what happen?? other friend: he ate too much coffee friend: oh...uh..john has been working alot of overtime lately....
Some good points there! Maybe caffeine should be a controlled substance since it's so deadly! It should be scheduled with the most addictive and deadly substances and it should be banned from all sales. It has no medical value anyways as there are better stimulants out there... Now think about that in relation to cannabis which isn't physically addictive and you can't die from an overdose, and has dozens of medical applications, which is still classified in the most dangerous drug category...
they promote them Monster drinks like their cool or something .. with a name Monster, it has to be good.. "energy blend," which includes 5,000 milligrams per can of caffeine and numerous other chemicals... uke:
I stay far away from "energy" drinks. I've got high BP and don't need the extra stimulus. Black tea works just fine and has lots of anti-oxidants to boot!
So true. Sadly the current drug laws we have in the U.S. and by extension/intimidation, the rest of the world, are based more on racist and political motives than because of how "dangerous" a substance is. I remember reading last year that the AMA had petitioned congress to reschedule cannabis because of the overwhelming evidence of it's medicinal value and use. Still waiting for that to happen I see. I notice how much more the word cannabis is used rather than marijuana. I find it interesting only because the word "cannabis" isn't as fraught with negative and emotional connotations as the word "marijuana" is. As far as caffeine is concerned, it appears to be the condoned stimulant and alcohol is the condoned depressant. Funny but there aren't any condoned psychedelics, I wonder why. I nominate LSD as the "approved" psychedelic for America. Think it's too late to get it on the ballot?
Well there's an active movement to stop using the term "marijuana" due to its pejorative connotations. It's a word that was used to pass cannabis prohibition because the legislators who voted for it didn't know they were banning cannabis. They thought marijuana was something else, not the same thing as hemp which was becoming ever more popular as a replacement for cotton, paper and other industrial uses. So the term was used to pull the wool over Congress' eyes and to start a new prohibition after alcohol prohibition was terminated. They had to keep all those agents working and needed a new menace to instill fear in the populace. Just like they still do...
