Does anyone have any advice on making your own clothes and such? I want to get a sewing machine so I can do that. Like use old stuff to make quilts out of, or curtains or pillowcases or something. Anybody that does it that can offer some tips?[IMG]

The thing that helped me the absolute most was to have a friend show me the basics of sewing. It helped that she is a professional costumer/seamstress, but anyone with a little knowledge would be good. If you can spare the money they have classes at sewing stores (but I've never taken one so I can't say much about them). After you have the basics (including being able to thread you rmachine easily!) and a little knowledge about stiches, patterns, and fabric, you can really get the hang of it. I make pajamas for my little boy, made him rompers when he was smaller, made a doll sling for a friend's daughter with only the idea of a pattern, and am about to start work on a skirt for me if I ever find time! Good Luck!

i make my own clothes but they're all knit or crochet... my mom tried teaching me to use a sewing machine but I always managed to break the needle, I'm such a klutz.

Have a lot of patience! Sometimes my dear Elna will be in a bad mood and jam even on the thinnest cotton fabric, and other days I can finish things within half an hour. Have a friend teach you how to wind the bobbin and to sit with you for your first couple of projects.
Also, start out with something easy such as a pillow case or 'tote' purse. Don't try to make a pleated skirt for your first project.
