Does anyone have any advice on making your own clothes and such? I want to get a sewing machine so I can do that. Like use old stuff to make quilts out of, or curtains or pillowcases or something. Anybody that does it that can offer some tips?
The thing that helped me the absolute most was to have a friend show me the basics of sewing. It helped that she is a professional costumer/seamstress, but anyone with a little knowledge would be good. If you can spare the money they have classes at sewing stores (but I've never taken one so I can't say much about them). After you have the basics (including being able to thread you rmachine easily!) and a little knowledge about stiches, patterns, and fabric, you can really get the hang of it. I make pajamas for my little boy, made him rompers when he was smaller, made a doll sling for a friend's daughter with only the idea of a pattern, and am about to start work on a skirt for me if I ever find time! Good Luck!
i make my own clothes but they're all knit or crochet... my mom tried teaching me to use a sewing machine but I always managed to break the needle, I'm such a klutz.
Have a lot of patience! Sometimes my dear Elna will be in a bad mood and jam even on the thinnest cotton fabric, and other days I can finish things within half an hour. Have a friend teach you how to wind the bobbin and to sit with you for your first couple of projects. Also, start out with something easy such as a pillow case or 'tote' purse. Don't try to make a pleated skirt for your first project.
