http://www.magickbotanicals.com/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=2 So I've just started the dread process (10 days in) and I just want to make sure that that is a suitable shampoo. It doesn't seem to be leaving any residue but I just want to be sure its good (I'm using the one in the first picture, the 16 oz oil free fragrance free shampoo). I dunno if you can tell just by that info but if you can I'd appreciate it. OIL FREE SHAMPOO Purified Water, Cocamidopropylbetaine, Alpha Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamide MEA, Methylparaben & Propylparaben, Fragrance Free. Those are the ingredients if it helps.
Nah and I know that dr. bronners is the recommended brand around here, but I started my dreads under the assumption I'd be able to track down a suitable shampoo fairly quickly, and I'd have to order dr. bronners.
If your ever unsure on the ingredients of a shampoo and if your question doesnt get answered here....Id use Baking soda. Its all natural and leaves your head squeaky clean! Somewhere on here there are ingredients for mixtures you can make. You can add different herbalage stuff to the baking soda for different desired effects.
What I have found to work really well is regular body soap from a health food store. You have a huge variety that way, and you can usually find locally made ones even at farmers markets and such. I've had great success with clay based ones, and some local ones with sea salt and tea tree.
The ingredients sound pretty questionable, I'll do some research. But just to compare, here are the ingredients on the shampoo bar that I use: spring water, saponified olive oil, hemp seed oil, coconut oil, shea butter and essential oils of rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, with nettles and lemongrass tinctures. See the difference? Just cause a shampoo is fragrance and oil free, doesn't mean its the best choice for your locks. As long as the fragrances come from essential oils, they are very beneficial to your locks & scalp. The saponified oils won't leave a residue, but they will mousturize your locks & scalp and help keep them healthy.
Okay, did some research. Alpha Olefin Sulfate is definitely a chemical. It has been linked to birth and/or developmental effects and can affect fertility. http://www.ewg.org/node/24937 Its used for all sorts of industrial purposes: Product usage- C16+ Alpha olefin sulfonate, detergent alcohols (oxo alcohols), lubricant additives, oilfield surfactants, alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA), wax lubricants http://www.uop.com/objects/30 Linear_1.pdf Methylparaben and propylparaben is a paraben and has been linked to causing cancer. I personally use paraben free deodorant. The EPA states that all parabens -- methyl, propyl, butyl -- have been proven to have endocrine-disrupting effects. They are particularly concerned about the hormone-disrupting effects of nonoxynol (nonyl phenol) found in hair colorings, shampoos, and spermicides, and sunscreen chemicals such as benzophenone [oxybenzone] and methoxycinnamate. It is very disturbing to learn that many of these chemicals can be found in personal care products that claim to be "natural" and "organic." We feel that some companies who pretend to be natural and organic are among the worst of the environmental hypocrites. http://www.terressentials.com/endocrine.html Cocamidopropylbetaine and Cocamide MEA are both coconut based, but they are combined with chemicals to produce a reaction. I'm still trying to learn more about these ingredients and how they are created.
I just make my own shampoo, it's more fun and wayyy cheaper and you know everything thats going into it
what do u use to make ur shampoo? cuz im running out of shampoo right now and think itd be fun to make my own. let alone if something happens where i cant get residue free shampoo at a store and have to go around with a stinky head.
Yea I'd actually be interested in knowing your recipe as well I know I read a shampoo recipe in Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book but, ironically, someone stole my copy of the book haha
