Lately I have been getting really into the genre of literature known as Magical Realism. It is basically the blending of reality and surreality. Usually time exists in a kind of timeless fluidity and the unreal happens as part of reality. It's kind of hard to explain, but I think it is a simply amazing genre. Some authors I particularly like are: -Jorge Luis Borges -Mikhail Bulgakov -William Faulkner -Gabriel Garcia Marquez -Milan Kundera -Thomas Pynchon Anyone else love this genre?
i don't know if i'd call faulkner a magical realist...but who am i to say? try Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow or Alice Hoffman or Margaret Atwood, who yes i know are contemporary, but totally worth their salt. or Francesca Lia Block...whose books, especially Dangerous Angel, i shamelessly promote...their young adult fiction, but amazing. do you read poetry at all?
Yeah, I wasn't sure about William Faulkner either, although his books are somewhat surreal. But I was looking at this site about magical realism and it listed him as one of the magical realism writers, so who knows? Either way, I really really love him I will check out those authors, I have heard of some of them, but have never read any. I do like poetry a lot and read it quite frequently.
I think I know what you mean, but I'm not quite sure! I'd like to know more about that genre, could you try to explain it a bit more? But if I understood what you meant right, then I surely love it. I have a few books like that, by that French author, René Barjavel. I don't really know more... but would love to!
I've never heard of writing classified this way.... painters are what came to mind when I read the title. But if, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 100 years of Solitude, would fit, then I understand what you mean. the others I'm going to check out.... :sunglasse

yes! i love this genre - i'd be more precise though: i loved 100 years of solitude for the story and characters but especially for the style of writing, the way Garcia Marquez uses language... thats hard to explain! i think the way he can use such a simple word or phrase and provoke so many emotions really seduces me... or something. hehe it seems that all the unlikely events in his stories are fuelled by human nature which he describes perfectly through his characters... i've found the same feeling in reading Isabel Allende, "Eva Luna", and i hear "The House of Spirits" is excellent too n.b.: anglophone authors frustrate me so much. peace
I love this genre too! Here in Belgium, we have (at least) 2 great writers of Magical Realism: 'Hubert Lampo' and 'Johan Daisne' . You know them?
