Okay guys, I bought some fungus a few weeks ago and stored them in the trunk of my car for about a week. I pulled them out and poured them out on my computer desk, and they were crawling with maggots!! Does anyone know why this happened and how it can be prevented in the future? Also, I've recently decided to grow my own mushrooms and am looking for a list of sites that actually will sell REAL spores, or maybe even just a list of some "brand" names of mushrooms. Peace-
Were there still some maggots? Id of boiled them and ate em.. Found this for u.. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2145865 It's *extremely* common. I have to reject more than half of the edible mushrooms I find because of maggot infestation. Eating the maggots is apparently harmless. In fact, they're high in protein and probably nutritious. On the other hand, as they tunnel through the mushroom they leave feces behind, and those feces can contain nasty bacteria which can cause food poisoning. The main thing is to reject any mushrooms which have become too infested. The maggots are usually found first at the base of the stem (I often find them first in the tubes of boletes). Cut the base of the stem (after you've identified your mushroom) to check for the holes. If there are lots of holes (or the mushroom has been hollowed out), leave themushrom there. If it's a bolete and the tubes are soft, peel the tubes and leave them. If you find only a few (or no) tubes, you're OK. Drying will cause the maggots to leave the mushroom and kill any that don't. Cooking the mushrooms will destroy most food poisoning type toxins, and mushrooms should be cooked before being eaten anyway. Happy mushrooming!
it means possibly they weren't totally dry? ive grown shrooms a few times and ive never had this problem.. maybe if you had them in a plastic bag? it can cause condensation, and then that will cause them to rot.. anyways, i keep them in paper bags when i store them.. and DONT EVER COOK with psychedelic mushrooms! HEAT WILL eventually DESTROY PSILOCYBIN and PSILOCIN.. at around 119*F i believe psilocybin will start to break down, or well oxidize..? however i think its a different story with psilocin.. but there are so many rumors about the subject, and since im no chemist i cant say for sure.. some people say over 200 will destroy them.. some say over 160.. but i know ive cooked and boiled(for tea) bomb mushrooms, and got no effects what so ever.. i tried telling one of my friends to.. and he had the same problem..
this is what I thought also. As the post I linked to is more about regular edble mushrooms. But all the same really. There may have been eggs and you just created the right evniroment for them to hatch and grow.
Thanks guys, really The mushrooms were like two weeks old and completely dry when I got them. I wrapped them up in tin foil because my friend and I had split the bag. But how would the maggots have formed in DRY mushrooms in a car trunk?
A car is never DRY.. Its made of metal. No matter car cools, and heats condensation forms, It gets damp. you just might not see it. Rain seeps in too.
so, the maggots can just form out of condensation? i'm not being a smartass, i just find it interesting an would like to learn more about it
There Had to be a fly of some sort to lay the egg(s) for the maggots to form. Apparently the flies got hold of the shrooms before they were put into the foil.

they sell psilcoybe spores mainly, and its perfectly legal cause the spores dont ahve any psilocybin in them
