I'm here staying at Echowood and it couldn't be any better! It Definatly surpassed all my expectations. Despite the fact that it is in Texas it seems like it's own little world. There is a herd of goats, some chickens and a large organic garden. It's twenty three acres of lovelyness! I cannot wait for summer here it will be simply magnifecnt. Though the tribe here is small there is alot of heart
wow, congrats! some friends and I were considering making the journey, but were just to attached to society right now. but i hope you have an amazing experience!
Can't wait for summer, eh? Yes you can. Tornadoes, snakes, skeeters, fire ants, ticks, etc. Did I mention it gets HOT there? Not your namby pamby hot either. The kind of hot where you lay on top of the sheets at night and sweat. And this can last for months at a time. But the garden will love it. x
Apparently this place has some air conditioning. Maybe in the sleepig areas? I don't know. I sent an email to them asking for more information and kind of introducing myself. I'm thinking about visiting for a while.
Yep there is air conditioners... what can I say... this place is just sweet. Really this place truely has enough nessesitys to spoil me... Netflix, Computer Network, GOOOD food, cool sleeping acommadations (I got my own room), Dogs, kitties and fresh vegatables from the garden. just to name a few
sounds awesome. I considered heading down there too but I'm not sure my canadian ass can handle a texas summer LOL. I'd love to know how its going if u want to pm me
Hey I sent a message to the email I was provided with but I didn't get any reply. Maybe you could pass the word on to check the gmail account, cloudflower? Thanks!
hey i grew up in vancouver and later toronto. its a matter of just getting used to it! at first texas seemed really hot, but now i dread the winters (under 60 degrees F) and i love the warm summers. dont feel like what you're used to can hold you back!
how bad are the summers in texas compared to up here? Its humid as all hell and makes me want to just lie on the floor in the shade all day LOL
It REALLY depends on where you are in Texas for the humidity, but in the summer it will almost always be 5C or more warmer than Ontario, even on the hottest days up there. Where I am in Houston it's even more humid than you have probably ever experienced. This is to be honest, not to scare you. When I first came I came to West Texas which although hot, has very little humidity. It was nice as far as staying cool, but I did have problems with dehydration and like my lips cracking and stuff at first. In both areas, the important thing is drink a TON of water and don't overdo it. There's lots of AC - every single building pretty much has it - so you aren't stuck in the heat unless you are working in it. Getting used to the heat took me a good couple of months during the summer time, being out doors regularily, and slowly reducing the consistency of my retreats indoors to the AC. Quick note BTW most people down here probably can't take the heat as well as you - they spend 90 percent of the time in a 70-75F AC'd building.
We work pretty hard during the week but it's definatly worth it. We just put up a fence and tilled another garden.... yay for more vegatelbes and fruits. We get wendsdays and saturdays for chill days. If you go to my profile and get the myspace link I have a whole album of echowood pictures under pics.
I would also like to know how you are paying the bills, what you're currently working on, and what time you start and quit working. Also, how much more room do you guys have before people start needing to camp outside until construction can be done? I have lots of questions, I know. I'm really interested in you guys since I'm only a few hours up the road.
Well the garden and chickens bring in abit of the income. We make jewerly and sell it. The newest money making deal is a tofu making kit, comes with everything needed to make your own tofu. I'm not sure about how much room is left, there will be alot more once we finish building the upstairs.
Just a quick nudge. I still haven't recieved any reply from the good people at Echowood concerning the request I sent to visit them.
heres another wonderful commune out near austin, that i would suggest. check out there site. echowood seems very nice, but this community is right on a private lake! http://www.glasscenter.org/people.html
