I always just recommend Hawkwind to people who claim to be Pink floyd fans. Sometimes the spacier Ayreon albums too. And Ozric tentacles. Then they don't have use for obscure Pink floyd stuff anymore :D

No doubt, but I remember a time when I claimed to be a Pink Floyd, Led-Zeppelin, Sabbath fan when I only knew their radio tunes. Everybody has to start somewhere.

These are some good tunes from the Syd era, my favorite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMkLKlHz6lQ"]Early Pink Floyd / "Lucy Leave" and "King Bee" RARE ! - YouTube

I feel the same frustration as the OP a bit when people claim to be sabbath fans when they mainly know Paranoid... a song I almost can't enjoy anymore because it is the only Sabbath song played everywhere it gets lame. Just got overplayed. Of course I'm an obvious Sabbath fan so when it's on people throw me the horns and proclaim how much they dig them when this song gets played once again in a bar, party etc.

You can call it like that, thought there were Pink Floyd elitists before the term hipster was 'hip' :p

I love On the Turning Away and Learning to Fly from a Momentary Lapse of Reason.

Possibly their best songs (even though I've only heard five albums =P)

For any uninitiated fans reading, there are four different Floyd eras: The psychedelic years, the exploring years, the Big Four albums, and the last thirty years. Feel free to try more than two albums from each

I think elitists are almost the opposite of the hipsters. Like a Pink Floyd elitist swears that the soundtrack for More and the studio side of Ummagumma is their best work, a hipster just owns a Pink Floyd t-shirt and has only heard DSOTM and The Wall like JMT said.
