In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII changed over from the old Julian calendar to the new Gregorian (named after him of course). To make sure that the leap years still kept the 365 day calendar year in sync with the actual solar cycle, he declared that October 4 would be followed by October 15, not October 5. Really only shortening the calendar year, nothing else, by ten days. But people back then were uneducated and simple. And they just didn't understand. They thought the pope was literally taking away 10 days from their lives. Employees thought they were be cheated out of ten days' wages. And there was violence and rioting, which was brutally suppressed.

I guess in a way the day Daylight Savings Time begins is like that. Because we lose an hour that day. Actually the peasants were right about the wages. In a way. If you work all night the day Daylight Savings Time ends (in the Fall, of course), do you still get the same wages equal to one late shift? You should probably talk to your employer about that.

The original reason for daylight saving time was to save whale oil and therefore money. Back in the day before electricity, people used whale oil in lanterns to light their homes at night. Obviously we don't do that now, bit it is nice to have an extra hour of daylight in the summertime when we can be outside and enjoy it.

The usefulness of daylight savings time diminishes as the latitude increases. Light till 10:00 pm in the summer at latitude 46 to 49 and dark till 8 or 9 am in the shorter days are a pain in the posterior.
