Slayer, Pantera, Megadeth, Metallica, Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Mayhem. Start there, see where you end up lol.

Pantera is a must. I can not stress the importance of this. Other good ones include Slayer, Metallica, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Hatebreed, and Korn are a few good starters. Hatebreed is probably right next to Pantera to check out. They kick ass.

I have to say Hatebreed is no where near the level of Pantera.

i have to say that im really not a fan of pantera, or metallica, megadeth, hatebreed, or lamb of god, slayer is good if you wanna get a few beers in you, if your a real newbie than id avoid black metal untill your ready, it takes some preparation. i would start with metallica first to get a taste, but like me you may grow out of it, same with slipknot, if you want intelligence and meaning, go for Tool (but dont start with 10,000 days, i suggest my favorite, Aenema) but hey just go to yahoo music and just look around they have audio clips so you can choose. oh yea and a good band that is super duper heavy that doesnt get old quick is Heaven Shall Burn

eh, i dunno if i can agree with you on teh tool. its not that i dont think theyre good, i just dont really view them as being all that metal. to be honest if this kids looking for anything heavy, jsut go to wikipedia type in metal genre. and just start researching bands from there youll find one easy as hell

Always start with Metallica. Mainly their first 4 albums, then the last 4 aren't as heavy but imo are still good.

search the different genres, and you'll find bands you like :)
just make sure you don't try to listen to them like they are a big wall of sound or it wont seem right to you. listen in retrospect to each different instrument if you can.

    other bands I recommend

    Megadeth
    Mudvayne
    Pantera
    Iron Maiden
    Judas Priest
    Necrophagist
    Slayer
    Cannibal Corpse
    Unearth
    Black Sabbath
    Dark Tranquillity
    Iced Earth
    Prong
    The Agony Scene
    Blind Guardian

    Death Metal
    Black Metal
    Thrash Metal
    Metalcore
    Power Metal
    Doom Metal

...and the list of Genres go on.

I seriously liking Windir & Iron Monkey right now.

    Iron Monkey - Sludgecore/Doom
    Windir - Norse/Black Metal

Wikipedia is a brilliant tool. Use it excatly as Centercast said. Then buy albums from In Flames and Killswitch Engage because they are soo fookin good XD

Their music has literally saved my life.

Its impossible to explain 'how good' certain bands are you just gotta hear them. And hear them LOUD!

My advice, listen to an online metal radio station (go to shoutcast.com for example) and see what you think. They've got them divided up nicely into death metal, 80's, power metal, etc.

Once you find out who you like, go to a site such as pandora.com. It lets you create your own radio station by choosing an artist you like, then plays other bands that are similar to that one. You then rate if you like or dislike the music and it will form a custom station as you listen.

    Hope this helps.
