So sorry if this is in the wrong area, but I am looking for some help! I've been dying to start a second set of dreads for about 6 months now, but with work and whatnot I just haven't gotten the time to do it. My plans have been to get up to Canada to have them made via the crochet method without any wax, etc at an awesome salon I found. The problem is - getting up to Canada! I just don't have the time, or rather - vacation time - to get up there to have them made. My first set got to be around 4 years old, but had been started with wax and it drove me nuts. So I brushed them out over the course of a week and have been enjoying my normal hair for about 2 years while growing it out. Now I'm ready for locks again! Are there any salons/peoples in the New Jersey/Pennsylvania/New York area that can crochet some dreads for me? I've been looking whenever I get a chance, but that isn't too often. I'm very particular about the finished product, and they must be neatly finished in order for me to keep my job/business. Hence my intent on getting them crocheted! These shots are of my first set - taken about 2.5 years ago. I'm itching to get back to that stage!
Hello, welcome. Sorry I live no where near you and don't know how to crochet anyway so I'd be useless Can I ask why your first set drove you nuts? Because you had started with wax or what?
Thanks for the welcome (technically I would say I'm a newbie - haven't been here in years!) My first set drove me nuts because of the wax. I was 19 when we made them and we stupidly bought a "dread kit" and probably went through 2 tubs of wax before I discovered online forums and just how bad wax was! I can't say they were dreads... the bottom 10 or so inches were more like hair candles.
So you felt they weren't "real dreads" then or what? Or did you have stinky dread problem? uhuh I can foresee the "great wax debate" comming......
Hahahaha... the wax debate! They were always sticky from the wax after all those years. Plus if I messed with the ends the slightest bit they came apart - sort of like when you pull apart a paintbrush that has paint on the bristles. It was gross.
Did you try any hardcore wax-removal things? (Sorry we are so far totally failing to help you with your question!!! haha )
LOL I tried anything and everything available. They weren't savable and once they got so far down my back the wax started causing me to break out all over my back and shoulders. As soon as they were gone everything cleared up within 2 weeks (of course only after months of treatment with all sorts of expensive prescriptions failed!) Anyhoo, I want a NEW set. These old ones are looooooooong gone!
Ooh I'd forgotten about the spots that wax causes...what a fucking nightmare... So the full-on crochet method is your next choice... are you worried about maintenance of the new growth? Will you keep going back to a salon?
Yes, crochet is my best bet - need to stay neat! I'm perfectly capable of doing the upkeep myself, that's not a problem. It's just getting someone to make them for me. I'm more than happy to pay for the time/service, but apparently there are very few people capable of crocheting a full set! I haven't got any friends willing to do it, and my significant other only made me my first set because he had a broken leg and couldn't get away. I'm willing to travel within the tri state area, maybe even farther (heck I'm willing to go to Canada if only I had the time!) but can't seem to find anyone.
No debate from me.... I dont mind people sayint that THEIR dreads suck because of wax...I have a problem with someone else telling me that MY dreads are gonna suck because I did use wax. A difference!
[/QUOTE] Are these made with the crochet metod? I really like the finish product. Where in Canada? Interested because I am in the same job situation. I greatly appreciate the info.
They were made with the backcomb and crapload of wax method. The backcomb is great, but the wax not so much. But I was insanely obsessive about upkeep and maintenance (about 1-2 hours a day of palm rolling, etc) I do have info for a salon that creates dreads that look very much like my old set via the crochet method. It's in Toronto - not sure if I'm allowed to post info like the name or address here so I'll PM you.
i have a freind in philly that does amazing work, twist n rip though and would never crochet, nor recomend anyoneelse does. the locks shes donre always come out amazing, and hers are totaly awesome. id have to get ya a number and shed be way cheaper then any salon, about 50 instead of 700 the results cant be denied and will absolutely last longer then crochetted dreads as well as look much better. i might have a pic of a russian freind who got hers done by her but shes very particular about her pics not going out on the webso if i eas able to find one i cant post ot but if you would concider one of the only people id ever suggest anyone go to to get dreads made then pm me and ill try to get ya a number
1-2 hours palmrolling a day?! geeez! They looks kinda tight at the root, did you do anything to them? You were saying that they seemed to unravel at the end? Palmrolling doesn't help that apparantly, it doesn't makes knots and can straighten them out a bit causing them to unravel...how long is your hair now?
maybe ya should stop obsessing over perfection? it will set you free do u salso obsdsess over weight over your work did u demand perferctuion of yourself in school to the point of it hurting you? fuck perfection dreads are meant to set u free from all that i doubyt ive done 1 hours maintanance (besides washing) in 10 years combined if u want my freinds number tho let me know, might take a day or 2 to get it, sshe moved as few months back
