Anyone know if this is decided upon yet? A friend of mine thinks it's still only rumour, but to look online would have you thinking it was definitive. And possibly the most exciting news ever, musically anyway, Pink Floyd have been approached to lend a hand! I don't have any idea on just how nasty things had got between the band, but Water's has apparently said once, 'The only way Pink Floyd will get back together will be for a good cause'. And Live Aid II is certainly that. I wonder if they'll roll Syd out :H
no.. they wouldn't get syd, it wouldn't be fair on him. not to do pink floyd anyway. i'd love to see waters gilmour mason wright back together though, and a live aid does seem to be a good cause
Ah yeah, I didn't really think Syd would be making an appearance If he wanted to, I wonder if they'd even have him? The organisers like. Anyway, Pink Floyd or no Pink Floyd, one of those bloody mobile phone text message lotteries will decide who gets tickets, so I shant be seeing them whatever the weather.
*cough spurts lemon yoghurt everywhere*sorry! wow. ow my brain. that would be ever so cool if part of floyd helped. woot. crumbs.
I'm gonna enter.. Purely for a little Macca entertainment.. But I'll never win.. So I'll be watching it on tv no doubt.. Hows you John? been a while
I like the idea of Live 8 that they're getting started, with the focus shifted away from simply charity to political action instead. Charity is very important, and provides relief from the symptoms of poverty, but the causes of poverty, unfair trade relations, sweat shop labour, national debt (dare I say global capitalism) need to be dealt with if we really are going make poverty history....
I'm with you on that one Sal (though really, it sounds like such a nice set of things, who wouldn't be? Well, apart from our dear leaders...) Charity can only do so much. No matter how much money we throw at things, it doesn't make the world go round.
(Hippie_Girl) OK right.. yeah its a good idea and that but this was just pointed out to me that at the big one.. the London gig... no black performers are appearing which seems a bit wrong to me... considering its a gig for like Africa!
I'm not his biggest fan either. He gives me the impression that he thinks he's the greatest human being since Christ or something! Like everyone but him has turned the world to shit and now he's smugly telling us to get our act together. He surely doesn't think that at all. But there's certainly some smugness The lack of non-white performers does seem a bit strange - But is that the same for all countries involved or just the UK event?
how many africans are playing? one in paris that is it.... They could have some more people from africa! After all this is the continent they are tryign to free from poverty..There's plenty world class african musicians.. baba maal for example
WHAT DOES IT MATTER ? .... when was this about black/white it is about poverty not the colour of peoples skin.
hmm, i just fucking have bob geldoff, and bono also! i mean, if they really gave a shite about world poverty, they could drop some spare change and probally save a million people
yeah, i know its a publicity thing it just annoys me, cos nothing will ever really happen unless there is fundemental change its like those fucking wrist bangs, they do sod all but mark out fashion with happy go lucky symbolism
Matthew is right, it doesn't really matter what skin colour the performers have. But it might of been nice to offer some involement to Africa. Since it isn't technically a charity event, but there to raise awareness about the continent - Surely showing some of the continent and it's people would help that awareness. I'm sure you've heard by now that the white 'Make Povery History' armbands are produced by a company who run some Chinese sweatshops of their own - So it looks like this fad will slip away soon. I'd like to know how many people who are wearing them have ever given money directly to a third-world charity. Most people I know who wear them do so because they're black and white and they support Newcastle United!
Issue number one... Band Aid and the original Live Aid was never about "quality" music... dear old Sir Bob was ruthless in only casting his net at the biggest names at the time... hence going for the like of Dire Straits and getting the old dinosaurs of rock like Jagger to play... it is about creating the maximum impact for maximum publicity... like Live Aid was about getting Sun readers to watch and give their money for a cause that was never likely to directly have an impact upon their lives, Live 8 will be about getting the maximum number of people involved in the campaign to put pressure on the G8... if you go all WOMAD on their target audience, they will only switch off... mentally and literally... this is about creating a mass movement not about representing a cultural identity... Fly...
