Live 8 stars to get $4,000 goodie bags 15:43 AEST Fri Jul 1 2005 AAP AP - Live 8 performers are playing for free, but local organisers plan to shower the celebrities with a Hugo Boss duffel bag loaded with high-fashion trinkets valued at about $4,000 They'll also be able to add to their goodie bags with big-ticket items including Hugo Boss suits, valued at $1,000 to $1,310 each; XM satellite radios and subscriptions, $655; Gibson guitars, $2,600; Bertolucci watches, valued between $2,000 and $7,900; and other items. In all, a celebrity could walk away with a bag of gifts worth as much as $15,700 "We want this to be a thank-you to the celebrities who are giving up their time and energies," said Nicole Cashman, whose firm was tapped by Larry Magid's Electric Factory Concerts to put the bags together. One ethicist said it was peculiar that the rich gifts are being offered at a concert whose aim is bringing attention to poverty in Africa. "It's not unethical, but it falls into the middle gray zone," Loyola Marymount University business and ethics professor Thomas White told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "Because on one hand the motivation is to help other people, while on the other hand the motivation is to help yourself, and that doesn't seem to go hand in hand." Another ethics expert said he wonders why the companies who donated the gifts wouldn't just give the money to charity. "There is nothing stopping the businesses from taking a stand, saying, 'No, we are going to take this money, and we are going to give it to the charity,"' said Rushworth M. Kidder, president of the Institute for Global Ethics in Camden, Maine. spac_writeAd('/SITE=NEWS/AREA=ENTERTAINMENT/LOC=TOP/AAMSZ=MEDIUM')
basicly live 8 is a trick to make the "younger" generation think that the govn't cares about its younger crwds. that the leaders are "cool" and "down" with our music hahaha. BULL
I agree with you's but I still think some of the bands are doing it for Poverty such as Pink floyd, Montely Crue and the some other bands. Those people have decsent hearts. But i do think the goverment is turning it around to make the government look like the good guy. I know where they can get some money to help those poor people legalize Marijuana, there we go Millions to give to Poverty. Whats more important Making sure people dont smoke a plant and enjoy themselves or Hundreads of Poor kids dieing each die, Wake up Jesus. Peace and love
I'm so pissed that Pink Floyd and Paul McCaurtney played in London, and not here. I guess it makes sense, since they're British, but man, there was no one good in Philly basically, I didn't even go...
i did get a weird vibe about the live 8..it seemed amazing that they had a concert to end poverty but it seemed like more of a publicity stunt then anything...idk maybe its just me but it seemed weird that those large companies would want to do sumthin like that.
it's possible for everyone to live a comfortable life but it's not possible to end poverty...... some concepts just won't work.....
i agree with you.. i watched it on tv.. and i really got the feeling that this was a total crock of shit.. all of these rock stars make millions and millions each year selling their records and playing concerts... and they get pampered like fucking queens.. and now they are playing for "free" to support poversion in africa... HA.. I dont buy it..
It has nothing to do with the goverment, it would be about TELLING the goverments of the 8 richest nations what they want. One last chance This year offers a truly exceptional set of opportunities for the UK to take a lead internationally and say that enough is enough. With the UK hosting the G8 gathering of powerful world leaders in July as well as holding the presidency of the European Union (EU) for the second half of the year, our Government and particularly Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, will be influential players on the world stage - we must make sure they play their part. They have the power and we can make them use it. http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/whatwewant/index.shtml Thanks for missing out the other couple of dozen artists on the bill (all over the globe).. and picking out the ones you like.. . I don't think they would be invited if they were doing it for selfish reasons.
[font="]Even if that’s true, we still have to try; some things are only impossible if we make them so by being so damn cynical and turning our backs. Whatever people think about those involved in live 8, the point is that people are talking, people can't ignore the stats anymore. This isn’t just about ending poverty, it's just not about giving aid, its about making changes. It's about making leaders remember they're sposed to represent the people, and it's about realising that borders mean nothing. The problems faced by those in poverty are also faced by those who are not, we're all stuck on this rock together, we're all part of the same family, its not about what we SHOULD do anymore, but what we HAVE to do. Thats pretty much a drop in the bucket compared to what these people get for going on tour. I don't really see the problem with a few gifts for participating in LIVE8. I get kinda disheartened when I see people at G8 protests with signs that say '9/11 was an inside job.' and the like. Not only are they idiots but they also missed the fuckin' point. But I guess that doesn't matter, this G8 will be a huge oppurtunity. If we can get $25 billion in aid for Africa and lift some subsidies which make free trade much more difficult for African nations. There are big problems giving aid too... there have been countless occasions in which african aid was given and used by dictators to buy weapons and commit mass murder. We can resolve this though, I'm pretty optimistic about G8.
Yeah, I'm sure these bands volunteered just so they could get gift bags. They didn't ask for them. Some rich snob promoter, who has no concept of "poor" decided to score brownie points. Most of those items are donated by the companies as a promotion stunt, which therefore is written off as a tax deduction. For whatever reason these bands are performing (I'm sure most are for the right reasons) it's more than you or I can do.
"Because on one hand the motivation is to help other people, while on the other hand the motivation is to help yourself, and that doesn't seem to go hand in hand." Yes, it can go hand in hand. If generosity and and selflessness enable the goodie-goodie to gain enligtenment, they are helping others and themselves at the same time. But I can see how giving gazillion dollar gifts is hypocritical. All that money spent on gifts could obviously go to providing tens of thousands of dollars in aid.
what I found ironic was how much time VH1 and MTV spent talking about the cause, yet they couldn't resist inundating us with commercials that I'm sure they were paid some good money for
