Children have the same expectation of privacy on the phone as their parents do, according to a recent ruling in WA state. A parent listening in on a phone call unannounced has been deemed as a violation of anti-wiretapping statutes.

Now if the courts would just ban those stupid "home piss test kits", minors might start to achieve true civil rights in their own homes...

    It's called P-A-R-E-N-T-I-N-G

    More "parents" should try it.

Kids have more rights than parents? Haha whatever, is it because you can't just treat them as property?

if a parent is responsible for their child's actions, then
they have the right to monitor there child's actions.

But should they be able to spy on them like that? Couldn't she have at least informed the kid she was going to do it?

If I think that my child is up to something that I am not going to aprove on, you bet that I am going to pic up that other line. I have gotten saved from making a stupid desion before because someone was listening on the other line and I did not know it. I was really pissed off when it happened, but now I realize what I was going to do, could have gotten me in a lot of trouble.

sometimes it's none of the parents business. when you have a 17 yr old girl on the pill you don't need to be listening on her conversations with her boyfreind. they are probably having sedx and talking about it. you might have been the one that took her to the appointment to get the pill, might have even made the appoinment. sometimes you gotta but out, cause you'll step into things you don't belong

Not to dis you or anyone who dose not have children. But let me show you this post when your have a daughter who is 17. Ever seen those commercal about the parents and there babies. And they say "having a baby changes everything" That is so 100 percent true. When I was a teenager, I swore that I was going to be a "cool mom". Now, if I thought my daughter was up to something that can get her into trouble (like having sex, which can cause babies and STD's). There is no way I would but out.

ellis, the main point is that Wash state law says that both parties must know the conversation is being recorded. Different states have different laws. Some states allow recording if only one party knows.

Yes, many states allow recording/monitoring of a conversation if one of the parties IN THE CONVERSATION is aware of it. In this case, NEITHER party was aware that the third party was listening in. And she wasn't doing it to "protect her daughter", she was doing it to spy on the BOYFRIEND to assist the police, a clear violation of privacy, IMHO.

I'm surprised they actually outlawed this... think about it, if parents are paying the phone bills dont they have the right to moniter any calls being made with THEIR money. Thats like giving your kid a ton of money to go shopping with, then not being able to know what they bought.
But I think the bigger issue here is that we should live in a society where parents wont need to spy on their kids. If we were all honost with each other, and everyone was a little more understanding, we wouldnt have to deal with all this crap.

The parent has the right to restrict and regulate the use of their telephone, not to listen in.

Id really only listen in on a call if i suspected something really bad going to happen to my kid...like a meet up with a pedophile or something..otherwise there really isnt a reason to listen in
