Last night I was mountain biking and drove through a swarm of fireflies.

At first I didn’t make the mental connection and thought WTF until it suddenly dawned on me. they’re pretty cool and when we were kids we used to catch them and some of the local colleges doing medical research would pay 1 cent per bug [IMG]

There were lots of lightening bugs when I was growing up. There's hardly any now. I guess my mom was right about them all dying if we caught too many. :(

There are LOTS of lightning bugs where I live (SC), along with mosquitoes, spiders and other various insects which many ppl think are cool.

BTW - lightning bugs are the ONLY insect (except for if lady bugs are insects) I think are "cool".

We have them a lot here in GA, though I grew up part-time here and never seen them. I also grew up in VA where I saw them all the time and we used to catch them in jars then let them out at the end of the night. That's cool that the school paid for them!

In SC, I found the spiders to be the coolest I've seen anywhere. I don't remember seeing lightning bugs there though...they are also called fireflies.

I had not see a lightening bug in years until a couple nights ago when one somehow got in my apartment. The room was dark and I kept seeing this tiny flashing light under the table. I am thinking I don't have anything electric down there. Sure enough it was a lightening bug. I captured it and let it go outside.

I remember seeing them when I was a kid and we'd go on vacations to Oklahoma, but I don't remember ever seeing them out here where I live.

We usually have them here... because of last winter being so "warm" and the early hot temps in March they are really thick this year.

Most of the bioluminescent creatures on earth lie deep within the ocean depths and we’re fortunate to have fireflies and other bioluminescent insects on the surface to appreciate :2thumbsup:
