lighting and ventilation questions

Hi, newbie with some questions. thanks in advance for your help.
are ventilated lights a gimmick or are they the real deal. do they make a big difference? is there much of a difference between the different kinds of rectangular reflectors? any superior models?
anyone know of a way to build-your-own carbon filters that is cheap n' easy rather than spend big bucks on the premade ones?

No ventilated lights are not a gimmick. Heat can be a real problem with HID lamps. I wouldn't worry to much about the shape of your reflector. Check this site out:-

Hi, another newbie haha. Well i got a light question. Would it be necessary to use a ballast on a 400W HPS???? This is probably a dumb question but just wondering. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

 

Yes you must have a ballast HPS lamps will not work without one.
