My boyfriend told me that his friend's girlfriend was a vegetarian for a long time, but then her hair started falling out, the doctor told her it was because she was a vegetarian, and she started eating meat again. I have never ever heard of this outside of what my boyfriend told me. Do you think he's just being a jerk? And don't you hate how people will lie to you just to twist your views? Then again, maybe the girl was just eating REALLY unhealthfully. ~Nova
sounds like an urban legend to me. I've got waist length hair and bee veg more than 20 years, while I get breakage if I get really sick (bad kidneys) I don'y have excessive shedding.
i IMAGINE that would be from a lack of protein, which would be from like you said, eating VERY unhealthy and probably a very limited diet. it would probably be very hard though to get THAT little of amino acids(protein) in your diet though to where it starts effecting hair growth. i cant think of a food without protein off hand, was she living on fruit juice or water or something??? its possible she was losing hair for some other reason too. there is not very much truth to what your boyfriends trying to say and i doubt you will start losing any hair anytime soon. though its possible what he said really happened, getting enough protein in your diet is not a hard task at all, and there are a ton of sources that are much healthier and arguably more enjoyable than any animal or animal product. i know someone who was told to eat meat because she wasnt getting enough iron in her diet, this advice came from a doctor, but she did not follow it, learned what was up on her own, and turned out just fine and probably better : )
My mom has been a veg since she was 21 (she's 47 now) and i've been vegan all my life, i've never had any hair "problems" except for shedding. my mom, a few yrs ago, got diagnosed with alopecia areata (sp?) and that's when your hair falls out and you get bald patches. she wore a wig for 2 yrs. and then her hair grew back. they said she needed more protein. i think it's bullshit, but doctors who dont specialty in vegan/vegetarian say that. but cardiologists and cancer doctors will reccomend vegan or vegetarian diets to people who need that specific diet. so, i dont know why your bf said that, but his friends's gf wasnt the only victim.
yes its from lack of protien..you can get protien from other things, but meat is the best way. My old roomate is veggie and her hair fell out all the time and was really thin and brittle..she moved in with her parents after she graduated college and they fed her better and her hair is really thick and shiny now
meat is an ineffective protein. Read up on the buffering required to digest the acidic flesh. pulls many essential minerald from the body's storehouse. Anyone with a bad diet will have either bad skin or bad hair. balanced diet of any kind is good skin/hair. If one lives on cheese, white bread, soda, twinkies and applesauce, kiss healthy hair goodbye.
I agree with drumminmama. Just plain eating unhealthy will do that to you. And, you CAN be a healthy vegan/vegetarian. My guess is she didnt do a lot of research so she resorted to eating junk food all the time, because she didnt know what was available to her. Whatever it is, it has nothing to do with being veggie. Lack of veggies and fruits will help in loss of hair as well. Either that or the guy is just telling tall tales.
my parents used to lie to me.. but not in the same way. they would try to tell me things they made were veggie when they werent/ so i try to not eat there, or cook my own food, and i try to inspect weverything they make me eat
My hair started falling out too, but it wasn't from the lack of protein, it was from stress. My parents thought it was because of lack of protein, but the doctor proved them wrong. So yeah, I doubt it's due to vegetarianism, unless she was really eating badly.
