Question for those who were around when they got really big. I love them and have been watching a bunch of videos tonight. (Here is a decent one with some vintage stuff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xLfBJlUP6E) So my question is this....what the hell got into these girls that made them so fanatical that they just broke down in tears and screamed over a simple solo or chorus? I've read other sources where the band says that they pretty much stopped playing live because of it. The screaming was so loud that the band couldn't even hear themselves and surely nobody else could either. My wife says she thinks it's a reflection of the repression of women at the time...that they could just let go and express themselves at a Beatles concert....and then everything came out at once. So for those of you who were there...I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
And...holy crap....as I'm listening to that link...at 38:00 or so Say Say Say with Paul and Michael Jackson comes on. I haven't heard that forever!
I obviously wasn't around at the time but I cant understand why anyone would want to listen to the beatles, let alone scream and lose their shit like that. I can honestly say there has never been a time at a show that I've burst into tears and acted like that.
Wasn't alive in, but I wanted to mention...teens-preteens are still like that. Have you seen the Justin Beiber fans? Or One Direction? Or pretty much any overpublicized, undertalented bands. Some of their fangirls (or fanboys) go INSANE. by the way, I love the Beatles too.
I was not there, but I never know why girls screamed and acted crazy...lol I never did or do.... Maybe crowd hysteria?
I was 10 when Ed Sullivan introduced the Beatles to us in 1964. I watched it and was hooked. I'm guessing the girls were screaming because Paul was so darned cute.
I don't think it has anything to do with female repression. I think it's created by the fact these bands are portrayed as so unreal, so above the rest of us, that is creates a literal obsession in (many many) young ones. Being in the physical presence of someone so huge is too much to handle. There is the possibility, also, that Lennon (or Bieber) will look into the crowd at you and fall in love (because you are the one). It's like the ultimate starstruckdom. Most of us probably would experience a lesser intense reaction when meeting a favourite celebrity, but I would say the reaction would still be in the same category as beatlemania...
I must admit that I love classic bands. I don't listen to them all the time but I appreciate what they've done. As much as I love the Beatles...tonight I was listening as more of a musical exercise. How is the song structured? How do they walk up to this note? How does that affect the vocal harmonies? Etc. I do that with lot's of bands but I just wondered about the frenzy of the girls. I've always wondered about that from a sociological view.
Well if I ever get my shit together enough to make it to one of your shows I'll be the one in front screaming and crying hysterically. You won't be able to miss me.
I don't know how you could cry at a show either. The only times I've seen girls cry are when it's obviously their first gig and they're in the middle all smiles and then they become stuck when the wave surges from the back to front and they get into fits of panic. It's really a pathetic site to be honest, tears, screams.. Security has to pull everything apart for a few seconds and it's always encore song which is generally the best and most energetic song of the night. I'm too busy drinking and having fun though, my elbows stay out and sharp, I'm not afraid to stick an elbow into the spine of a dickhead etc. I once rubbed this guys spine so hard for what seemed like half an hour and my arm was sore the next day, I hope he wasn't able to stand.. He was a dickhead though. I have no respect for people that push and barge their way to the front just knocking people over. Really grinds my gears. -.-
I look forward to that! :afro: June 28th is our next show. The Shagstock festival. It's totally free for everyone. A dozen or so bands, camping, etc. Just show up and pitch a tent in the camping area. It's the musicians way of saying thank you to everyone. Nobody is being paid to play. It's all about you...the people who support us. But anyway...the Beatles...
In a death metal crowd you just need to read and react, like a good game of football. =p Circle pits are the easiest crowds to manoeuvre to the front for everyone gets into a big circle to start charging and it opens the floor right up so you just run straight up the middle and to the front while everyone fights behind you. =p
Did you have to change the name of your festival because of that other Shagstock with those crappy metal bands?
Hmm...never heard of that one. So far it hasn't been a problem. Ours isn't a large festival with thousands of people anyway. More like a huge party with a bunch of bands. But it gets bigger every year. One day there might be thousands of screaming teenage girls and we can just play a backing track and pretend to play our instruments and nobody will know. Easy paycheck.
The earlier rockers had thier screaming fans too. Elvis and Holly and the like. Pre-teen obsession, like someone else said. These men/boys are often portrayed as 'the perfect boyfriend' It's fetish fodder for the 10-15 year olds.
