Sorry to disappoint. It was made that way. It has a big metal pole that goes into the stand. It's very sturdy despite what it looks like. It's actually reversible. You can turn it the other way too. The way I convinced my husband to agree to buy it was with the understanding that we would change it back and forth every other year. We've had it 4 years and it's been upside down 3 of them and it will be upside down this year too. I WIN!!!!!
