Lets ban ALL governmental marriage. This idea was brought to me via The West Wing. If everyone can't have the same rights, get rid of them all together. Marriage should be strictly religious, not governmental. This way, everyone is equal. Man, what a great idea!
No, religious marriages should no longer be recognized by the state, and state-recognized marriages should be all state-run with no restrictions on gender. I say we just remove the religious aspect alltogether.
We need seperation of church and state, I'd still want marriage around. Ya never know what might happen, ya know?
yeah that's what i mean. you could still get married religously, just it wouldn't be recognized by the government
Actually, there are alot of fanancial benefits to legal marriage. You can visit your partner in the hospital, you get a tax break, etc. If there were no benefits to legal marriage, than gay people wouldn't be pushing for it so much.
Or everyone could have the same rights, that would be a truer and more beneficial equality. I would never ever be arrogant enough to deprive anyone of the right to make lifestyle choices. What the hell's it to me and you how others wish to conduct their lives if they aren't harming anyone. Most people get married because of religion, or at least something vaguly spiritual. That is the only reason I would consider it. Religion brings people contentment and in most cases causes no harm to others. The devoutly secular can be as bad as any fudementalists. Just let everyone get on with it, we respect you so respect others. Hmm good point, not sure if I will get married, but it's nice to have options. Maybe the gay marriage issue is just a point of principle. They are being discriminated against for being gay, and that really isn't fair. I doubt everyone involved in fighting segregation in the 60's actually used the [segregated] facilites but it didn't put them off. Good principle but impossible, or else very difficult. There has been plenty of agro going on in France were no religious symbols/dress are allowed in schools. The muslims are pretty pissed about it. There should be equal respect for, and acknowledgement of, all belief systems. But leaders should be objective (as far as possible) I'm pretty sure that in the cases for marriage ceremonies within 'minor' religions. Particually handfastings (pagan weddings). Seems a lot of extra effort and fuss to have ceremony then go to the registery office (or vice versa)
George is right... hehe, George, you get Bush and Cheny, I'll take Condelizza Rice. Then again, i doubt she'll have me, I can't even spell her name.
i know that there are financial benifits, but who here likes capitalism? fuck it. people shouldnt get married for money anyhow. and it would cut out all the immigrants marrying so that they dont get deported. my friend is from jordan, and her stepdad is a total prick. he's controlling, and lying, and cheating, and doesn't take care of the family. infact, he HATES the family. but he married my friend's mom in order to stay here legally, and now he's ruined 5 people's lives. so yeah, it'd be nice for everyone to be allowed to be married. and why stop at gays? why not mormons? it's their belief to have multiple wives, and as long as they're all in agreement, why should the government care? i hate the damned government. can't wait to move to canada!
I heard today that Elton John supports the Democrats, and they say he isn't in to Bush at all, and never will be. Lots of good ol common sense here on this thread, either take it right out, or make it fair. Sounds simple enough, so whats the problem? How come so many people feel that gay marriage somehow negatively impacts them? I dont get it. How does it affect their marriage at all? If it does, maybe they should look at their marriage more closely.
i don't think that marriage worths to be banned. It's something really useless for me.I don't believe that god gives you his grace or sth when you get married, so marriage in church is the same thing as political marriage in my opinion.Fuck them both i'd say... But since everybody has the right to choose, i wouldn't take it away.Personally i don't give a shit about religion and church, so i'm not planning to get married(either way) but there are too many religious people who could never allow that happen.
