So in the stoner's lounge there is a thread about drug control starting (at least partly) because of racism. Conversation evolved into different, better alternative methods of drug control, and I had this idea.

"I believe all substances should be legal. They can still be controlled. Speaking from experience, I could get a bag of weed in about 15-30 minutes, but it would take me hours, to days, to find a way to get alcohol. (Not that I even like to drink). One is controlled, the other isn't. I think a perfect way to control drugs in the safest, society friendly way would be to give out licenses to do the specific drug. Almost like firearms. In order to get cocaine for instance, you would have to go through a background check, possibly classes, and then you would be able to buy it. But, one fuck-up and you get your license revoked. The more extreme the drug, the more rigid the policy. Something like marijuana would be relatively simple to attain a license for, but getting one for heroin would be quite the process. With digital technology, the government could even set limits on how much of a substance someone could buy in a time period. Would it still be possible to get the substance you want without a license? Of course. But it would be a LOT harder. Not to mention, the substance could be taxed, and the supply could increase, forcing prices down. Drug cartels, and all the other "bad guys" we hear about would be out of a serious money-making job. But I guess this idea is too logical for our government..."

Budtoker likes the idea, and we want to run with it. We were curious as to your opinions and ideas. We obviously will need help to make this idea reality. If any of you have different ideas, please share.

Yeah, but in reality, without the licensing legislation would never get passed. It would never get enough votes.

But what happens to the person with the cocaine licence that turns it into crack ? They lose there licence? That would just fuel the black market the substance could be gotten from another licenced person with price mark up.
Dont get me wrong I belive you should be able to put whatever you want into your body with no goverment interfearence. I belive the key to the situation is treat drugs as a public health problem educate and treat addiction not prosecute it.

Yep, they lose their liscense. The black amrket for drugs would be nearly non-existent with this plan. A person with a liscense for cocaine would only be alloted a certain ammount every, lets say week. There would not be enough for people to really sell, and why would someone risk buying it when they can just obtain a liscense and get it for way cheaper?
Liscenses would only be revoked if people did illegal things, like drink and drive. You wouldn't just let a drunk driver get away with no penalty would you? It's a dangerous crime, not only to the driver, but the surrounding populace.
Not only that but with liscense renewal and control by the government, addicts would be easily noticable and the government would more easily and readily be able to give them the help they need.
Also, it would be a big boost to the economy from taxing the drugs.
This plan actually has a chance of working, while a "no government interference", do what you want plan would never gain support from the government or public.

I think you make some good points but its like when someone buys alcohol for a minor that is a black market economy.
Also I dont think the price would drop to much because our goverment would want to maximize there profits.
Anything has got to be better than ''the war on drugs''.
    Peace

The government wouldn't make and sell the product nesicarily. It would be like cigarretes and alcohol, they just tax and regulate it.
