In the UK (laws are probably similar in most other countries) it is legal to be married at age 16, but not to buy porn, or vote, until age 18.

There is no age limit on the purchase of condoms (which I fully agree with, by the way) which, if you think about it, promotes illegal, underage sex (albeit safe sex).

However, it is illegal to purchase basic personal sex toys, such as a FleshLight or a vibrator (which are primarily to be used for masturbation, which is not only legal at all ages, but encouraged) until the age of 18.

Then, of course, there are all sorts of porn sites which, in theory, require that you affirm that you are of legal age by clicking on a button. As if some horny adolescent is likely to click on 'No' while he / she is on his / her bedroom PC.

Isn't it about time we got real?

^^^^ agreed. Kind of like in the US you can go to war, pick the nations leaders, etc. at 18. You can not however legally buy yourself a beer until 21.

Lesson: From a legislative standpoint people can be very, very stupid.

18 year olds make enough silly decisons (like go to war, vote for twit politicians, etc.) when sober.

Are you suggesting that we add beer to increase the wisdom of the 18 year old's decision making process, by lowering the drinking age.

Or are you suggesting that we raise the voting etc. age to 21?

Funny how those decisions are made and politicians elected by a majority of older voters. Statistics show a significant increase in voting by age, so thank your generation for the bad decisions and twits:). Thank mine for not getting off their asses to help.

Maybe if say, I don't know, more attention was paid to teaching younger people social and political responsibility less to bitching about young people, you may not have such a cynical outlook about the people who have been groomed to take over the country.
But back on the point, I was more speaking to the total inconsistency in our laws and poorly written reactionary legislation. I do however think the drinking age is rediculous. It is set by political stigmatism, not logic.

Didn't the voting age used to be 21 though. It looks like that was brought down, but other things with age restrictions on were overlooked.

Ding ding ding, you win a cookie! Kind of. lol.

In 1971 the 26th amendment federally standardized the voting age at 18, previously 21 with some state ability to regulate. Exception being some states allow 17 year olds to vote in primaries if they will be 18 by election day.

Booze was actually regulated on a state to state basis until 1984. Technically it is still controlled by the states, the Act does not directly regulate the age, rather it decreed a cut in federal funding for states who allowed general purchase of alcohol by those under 21. Ie- dirty politics to force the states' hands. Very few states have an all out ban on drinking under 21, just the public purchase and consumption. Most have various private location, family permissive, club member, etc. allowances, they iust set the public purchase at 21 to appease the political bullying and not be financially punished by the federal government for allowing citizens freedom of choice. It is a hot mess of political red tape and very little logic.

Well yeah young people just do stupid things like drinking and driving, posting dumb things online, getting in fights, all that wild stuff that's exemplified in any wild party in a movie.

Anyway in regards to the OP, this is part of the reason I made my earlier thread about how young is too young for sex toys, because like you pointed out, masturbation is pretty harmless compared to unsafe sex and sometimes in order to climax you need more than just your fingers. (although I think this is rare)

    ---
In regards to the age restrictions on online adult content, I have mixed feelings because I know tons of cases where the younger generation gets a bad idea of how sex should really work and what would feel pleasurable for their partner in real life.

And I am a firm believer in how porn can cause lack of arousal in some men because their fantasies are higher than what their girlfriends or wives can or are willing to do. This can also cause breakups between really good people who are matched well in other areas except the sexual one, had there not been porn.

At the same time though, not everyone has these side affects just because they viewed porn, and I don't want to deny any person the freedom to see adult material especially if that's all they got going for them at that given moment in time.

I think there should be more of a sub-rating system within the adult rating, meaning the extreme violent hard sex is restricted, but say softcore adult material is not beholden to those restrictions.
