I've never been one to judge and label music, as music is meant to be listened to and enjoyed. But as I find Led Zeppelin to most likely be THE most overrated and trendy band in musical history I have to ask the question is Led Zeppelin truly heavy metal? Many of their songs feature alot of melody the riffs are quite tame compared to that of Black Sabbath, a band that was part of the "early heavy metal scene" before Zepp ever came to stage.

While the likes of Black Sabbaths first album featured lighter tones than modern day metal their second album Paranoid was much heavier and featured much harder riffs. In comparison, with Led Zeppelin, the song remains the same (wit?) and they haven't really changed their sound to the harder stuff we later heard from Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.

Even Robert plant said that they shouldn't stereotype the band as metal as most of their music was acoustic and featured more folk influence.

They're not metal. Just a band that had hard rock elements which are close to the early heavy metal sound.

I don't know who would strongly argue against that.. Not metal.

As a side note.. The Yardbirds were makin history before the early metal the sparked Black Sabbath was around. :)

Who said Led Zeppelin was metal?

And I agree with you. I think Zeppelin is probably THE most overrated band of all time.

First album is heavy as fuck and borders on proto-metal, but no.

they're not metal but some of their stuff is right on the threshold. they definitely inspired a lot of metal bands.

but i have to disagree with you on the overrated issue. they're just a good enough band to deserve all the praise they get.

    That's exactly what they were.

Tony Iommi has also said that's what Sabbath are many times.

To narrow down Zep into blues or metal or any other niche would be silly. They had a wide range of style.

I dig their blues and heaviest stuff the most, but I love it all. Definitely NOT overrated by any means. Anyone who is familiar with their full range of expression could argue they are underrated.

by defination, led zep is not a metal band.Zeppelin took the blues and r&b elements and amped them up..I have to disagree with the overated part. They deserve every bit of high praise they ever got. to have that many albums, and not sound stale is just amazing..you cant be a rock& roll listener and not have led zep in your collection.one of the best bands in history, and thats not just my opinion..
