well, the only advice i can give is practice and enjoy practicing. when learning an instrument, it is not about the final outcome, because there is no final outcome...its all about the journey with music....

Do you play any other instruments like violin or viola? I find that if you have background in a similar instrument it can take you a LONG way. If you don't have experience in those, then I suggest you buy some beginner books like Essential Elements. Some tape on the fingerboard is also really helpful, and I'm sure if you went to an orchestra store they could put them in the right places. If you have enough time and money to spend, I'd strongly suggest some private lessons to get you going. Good luck with learning it, cellos are beautiful instruments :)

Sorry, I also wanted to add that you might have a tough time getting into it, especially at age 20 (I still believe, though, that it's never too late to learn an instrument:)) So even if you feel like you want to quit, keep going! The more you progress the happier you'll be, and the closer you'll be to playing some of the most beautiful songs out there.

And I guess I shouldn't really be replying here because I play violin, but I just wanted to offer some support:)

Someone recently told me that they thought of the Cello as a un-ladylike instrument ;)

Violin experience definetly helps. Good luck.

I think they can go either way, but they might actually be a little more feminine. I love how people look when they play cello :D

Yes the Cello is sexy for women! Personally I went for the oddball instrument in the orchestra, the viola. (A special cookie goes out to all who know what that is.) But if I were to take up another instrument I would definately choose the Cello.

Viola is right between violin and cello.... a "bass violin" so to speak.

I would call it more an alto violin. A cello would be a bass violin.

THERES NO FRETS...sorry, i use to play the viola but when i got my guitar i was hooked on that. but once i learned more about music theory i wanted to pick it back up but didnt realize how much i had come to depend on frets :( im slowly picking it back up though :) i do think cello would be fun to learn though
