Well, there are plenty of sites which will teach you songs as well as music theory. As for technique, it's really tough to convey that kind of thing in words. It's best to have someone show you, or, worst case, just practice a lot yourself and really analyze the sound of your playing to make sure you're getting a good, clean, singing and ringing tone from your instrument.
Practise is the best method. I've practised several hours a day since I was eight (and I'm still crap.)
practice, practice, practice. I would recommend finding an easy song to learn... maybe three or four chords and practice until you can play that song backwards and forwards. Then try something a bit more difficult, but don't forget to practice the stuff you've already 'perfected'. Just keep working at it, all you need is time.
To the OP, don't take this guy too seriously. What he calls crap, you'd probably be really impressed by. It depends what scale you're measuring it on. If you're measuring against the great rock guitarists, most people are crappy. However, if you practice several hours a day for a year or so, you'll be pretty good. It only takes a couple of months to really get your chord changes down. A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, F and G are the first chords you should learn.
Go buy some music (any band of your choice) books with notes + tabs. Then practise till your fingers bleed.
Ultimate-guitar.com But don't rely on tabs, just use them as a tool. This site also has some good "lessons" that help you teach yourself. PEACE
