Ok, i've decided this is by far the best, and probably, the only way i'm going to successfully learn french.

But, i'm not sure how to really go about doing this. I can't afford an expensive course and afford to live as well, and i don't think those are very efficient anyway. I have about Û5000-6000 total - More if i absolutely need it. I want to rent a place, find a quick way to learn french (i know a little) and make friends, get (any) job to further improve and cover living costs.

I need to find a cool, hip place to live that isn't too expensive, has a good scene for aspiring musicians and artists, and i need someway of learning french quickly and making new friends so i can get a job and a life.

I am incredibly naive when it comes this sort of thing, so i'd like to hear some advice from anyone who has done this, anyone who's thought of doing this, anyone living in France, and well, anyone else who has something contructive or nice to say. :) - I don't need anyone to mean, i can be mean to myself! ;)

    Thanks again...
    Paul.

    Hey Paul!

I couldn't agree with you more... learning the language is the very best and very quickest way to go about it! I have done it!

I couldn't see what currency symbol you put in your posting, was it GBP, EUR or USD? It can make quite a difference!

Also, where are you from? Its just that if you are non-EU you won't be able to get a job so you can rule that out straight away!

To get your French up to a decent level I would recommending taking an intensive course at a French language school, and to save money and to help you learn more quickly, stay with a French host family while you do so.

As a non-native speaker, you may find it difficult to find a job with a French company, employment can be quite competitive in France, much more so than in th UK. So, I really wouldn't rely on this.

It may be a better bet for you to arrange in advance a summer job in France from the UK.

So, take the longest language course in France you can given your budget, and time it so that you finish your course then move onto your summer job in france, (working on campsites for someone like Canvas Holidays or Eurocamp, or for a hotel), where you won't earn much but will have accommodtion provided and at the very least, will have the opportunity to make some French friends.

As for locations in which to study... the kind of cool hip locations you describe tend to me more expensive! Have you considered Montpellier? Its a really cool university city, big enough to have l a bit of a music and arty scene, but a little more affordable than Paris.

If you have any further questions, need school recommendations etc. just ask away Paul. I can offer you plenty more information, like I said, I have been there and done it!

    Bonne chance!

-That's in Euros (it won't display the symbol).
    -I'm British.
-Montpellier does seem like a great city (i've only been there once!) - but Paris has everything you could ever want!
-I think you're right, language course then summer job seems to be my best option, then maybe a half-decent winter job in the alps.
-I'm going to study for TEFL certificate as well (i currently teach english in my free time, but i don't have a qualification), so i'll have something i could fall back on to avoid coming back home!
-Thanks for taking the time to respond! :)

Do it. I mean: it's gonna be difficult at first. But you gotta learn how to swim in order not to sink.
