Learning Dutch

Hi there,
I am trying to teach myself some Dutch at the moment, because - well, for no real reason except for the fact that I love learning languages and I'm quite fond of Dutch.
I'm not asking for a translation service here but I think it would be great to have a thread where Dutch learners could ask questions and maaaybe there are some kind souls among you who would be willing to help.
Maar ik heb gehoord de Nederlanderen zijn erg vriendelijk! (Are there less than 5 mistakes in this sentence? ^^)

The questions I have at the moment are:
1. Do you know a good Dutch-English or German-English online dictionary?
2. Is there a good "mopje van de dag"-site which offers e-mail subscriptions?
3. Which radio station would you recommend? I want to listen to Dutch radio from time to time to get the "melody" of the language into my subconscious.
4. Any other tips I absolutely need to know?

Haha thanks I knew there was something wrong! ^^

1. I don't mean a translation tool for whole texts (though they can be funny!), just a word-by-word translation thingie. I do have a "real" dictionary, but it's quite small and sometimes there are words I can't find so I was searching for an additional tool.

2. Yes, they do exist, but so far I've only found sites without an e-mail subscription option.

Another question: Dankuwel is more formal (to older persons, more respectful etc.) and dankjewel the more informal version, isn't it?

 

That's right. 'U' is like 'Sie' in german and 'vous' in french. 'Je' or 'jij' is the same as 'du' in german and 'tu' in french.

 

and you don't have to add -wel. dank u or dank je is enough.

 

or just bedankt.

 

And if you want to thank several people? Is it dank u/dank je too or can you just use bedankt?

A nice website for Dutch radiochannels is www.nederland.fm You can find almost all Dutch online available radiostations here. Just pick the one you like.

Klarens: would you like me to correct you with some little mistakes in your Dutch?
Hoe gaat het met jouw? => Hoe gaat het met jou. Jouw is referring to property. (bezittelijk voornaamwoord) You would say: is dat jouw boek? If you say hoe gaat het met jou you are referring to a person so it is just jou.

The pilsjes alsjeblieft. You just forgot the s in pilsjes.

2000: A space odyssey by Stanley Kubrick. No worries, I don't mind typo's by people who doesn't have dutch as their first language (anymore). We have a very annoying spelling and it's getting changed every few years...

 

It always takes me a minute to switch back. Even when I speak in dutch. When I talk to my mom and dad back home in the beginning I catch myself throwing in some english words

 

Hi All!

I am new to this site and I am excited to see this forum.

I lived in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium for my Junior Year of College in 1989-1990 and had the best experience.

I got some tutoring in Dutch by a Dutch woman the summer before I went, and I took Intensive Language Courses while there. I also made sure to hand out with just Belgians (and other Europeans) as opposed to Americans while I was there so I could pick up the language as much as possible.

Obviously, it has been quite a while, so my skills are pretty lacking. Plus I lived in Leuven, and as I understand it, many areas of Belgium have strong regional dialects so that when we would travel to another city, my Belgian friends would have trouble understanding what their fellow countrymen were saying.

I guess to start out, I have a question that I have been asked a million times and was never able to answer to my satisfaction. Maybe you all can help me.

What exactly is the difference between Dutch and Flemish?

So, the first sentence I learned in Dutch was: Ik Wil een paar gemakilijke schoenen kopen. (sorry the spelling was butchered, I just thought it was a funny first sentence to learn).

translates..I wanna buy a pair of easy fitting shoes
the difference between Dutch/Flemish is not so easy to grasp..
both languages are written the same..exept for Friesch..
or some local Belgian dialects..talking about dialects..
the spoken Dutch/Flemish is very differernt indeed..
some words are also typical Dutch or typical Flemish..
sodemieter op??means get lost..but we say..stap het af..
a Belgian will not understand someone from Friesland..
even the Dutch don't understand them..:H
a Flemisch inhabitant of Bruges..
is not understood in the province of Limburg and so on..
Belgium/Netherlands...are 2 countries..different cultures..
different life styles..but same written language..
I always loved the Dutch people..I always had good friends there..

Wel eigenlijk is nederlands echt niet zo moeilijk als je denkt, je spreekt het gewoon, vanwaar eigenlijk de drang om nederlands te kunnen spreken??
Jullie komen er toch nooit?

Globaal gezien valt het spreken misschien wel mee, denk dat het vooral met werkwoorden in de verleden tijd nogal eens lastig is. Foutloos nederlands schrijven daarentegen is enorm lastig om nu nog eens te leren. Zelfs de duitse taal krijg je eerder onder de knie.

 

Nee joh, Nederlands lijkt me naderhand wel een stuk makkelijker dan Duits!
Kwas van de zomer nog in Duitsland..nouuu dat is mij een moeilijke taal hoor!
Voor engels-sprekenden lijkt Nederlands mij toch een stuk makkelijker op de tong.

 

Hihi, precies wat ik zei dus :tongue:. Om te praten is het misschien wel makkelijk, maar onze spelling maakt het foutloos leren schrijven wel echt lastig. Nu ben ik ook niet echt een ster in duits schrijven (en praten), maar daar zit in ieder geval een goed werkend logisch systeem in, net als bij het engels en frans etc.
