I was surprised this morning to discover that both Microsoft and Firefox browsers had big updates ready for me.

Nine new security patches? Really? All at once? And Firefox too...

When I tried to find out more about each one, I had to click thru a succession of at least 5 windows to FINALLY get something about why they were necessary. They are REALLY hiding the reasons for these upgrades.

I'm sure MOST of these upgrades were in process anyway, but the coincidental timing of both Firefox & Microsoft updates is highly suspicious.

Considering there have been NO news reports of BIG problems with Internet security, no big viruses or trojans on the loose (other than the usual), it is very curious.

Indeed if you inspect the updates you'll find some curious things. Microsoft isn't just updating IE, but also Windows itself at the same time.

One of the bugs is supposed to only affect those using the Korean language module. Why force everyone to install that?

Right after I installed the Microsoft updates my Zone Alarm informed me that Windows needed to access the Internet via port 1900, using IP# 239.255.255.255...

If you look that up you'll find that 239.255.255.255 is a MULTICAST service, rarely used by anyone. Perhaps it's just a service for their media player. But I can see a much more insidious use for that...

The timing of all this is HIGHLY suspect. After all it's only been ONE WEEK or so since BUSHIT signed a NEW LAW giving NEW POWERS for Domestic Spying to his gov't. This law not only gave them powers they had already been using illegally, but enhanced those powers further, esp. for domestic spying.

My guess is not only has Microsoft enabled the US gov't to spy on your computer now, but they might also have a NEW CAPABILITY to BROADCAST new code onto ALL computers running IE and XP or VISTA.

In other words in a specific scenario, Microsoft could be ordered by the US gov't to SHUT DOWN all computers running Microsoft windows, or perhaps just target specific ones for shutdown.

I can see their paranoid security rant that got them this power. "But if terrorists are about to launch an attack, and they post the GO DO IT message on the Internet, we need to be able to shutdown that server and every computer that might see it".

You get the idea. In other words our gov't need only dream up a scenario, no matter how unlikely that might possibly impact our security, and suddenly they get COMPLETE POWER over as much of the Internet as they choose.

I'm sorry but the TIMING on this is very suspicious, coming on the heals of new spy laws. Like they were just waiting for this...

Time to SERIOUSLY consider another operating system and browser!

I NEVER allow Microsoft updates. Once I do an install, I'll put in SP1 to get my USB2 to work and after that, I turn off all updates.

I'd rather have a well configured Zonealarm that what MS is offering.

DRM is a biggy with MS now too.

Ah, READ THIS! Now they're also spying on us from ABOVE! All these new laws are happening with NO FUCKING DEBATE it seems.

Now we have our own spy satellites spying on us here in the USA!!!

I guess WE ARE NOW THE ENEMY!

This is soooooo fucked up! They would never have gotten away with this shit BEFORE BUSHIT took office.

I have not used Windows, other than at work but that is not my choice, for a few years now. Linux is fully capable of doing everything most people want and it has become even easier to use in the past year. I highly suggest checking out Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/

Look, here's another story about training terrorists over the Internet.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUSN1524872020070815?feedType=RSS&feedName=internetNews&rpc=22&sp=true

These stories are NOT BY COINCIDENCE!

This adminstration ALWAYS seems to publish stories to support whatever new legislation they've put in place.

They're using THIS NEW B.S. reason to allow this SPY software to be installed ON EVERYONE'S Computers!

Keep looking for more stories attempting to justify this new SPY SYSTEM they're setting up right NOW as part of HOMELAND INSECURITY!

EVERYONE SHOULD BE OUTRAGED AT THE LOSS OF PRIVACY!

It's because some of us are old enough to be paranoid.

There's a lot going on beneath the surface you're probably not aware of yet.

Like the internet? If something happens and martial law is declared, you may find your connection terminated as a matter of "national security".

Eventually, we will all be put into digital concentration camps where our collective consciousness will be forced into cannibalism.

End user beware all "versions" of Windows Vista includes embedded software that blatantly monitors a user's computer habbits, Microsoft officially claims it's for marketing purposes only but I don't believe that for a second. To think that Microsuck isn't gonna try and update every XP machine with this same software is foolish. All I can say is I'm glad I got away from Microsoft products when I did, they're starting to get downright totalitarian on top of being fascist. [IMG]

Yeah, but what did people do before The Internet? I don't have any news articles or studies or anything to back up my thoughts, but I think that our internet activity is already being monitored, by someone, somewhere, IMO. I think that the human race will survive if Bill/The Government take down the internet. It is going to get worse before it gets better. These are just my thoughts.

We've allowed corporations and our gov'ts TOO MUCH ACCESS to our personal information. Information like what websites we browse to, what we buy, who we email, what we say to others thru the Internet should all be PRIVATE unless we say otherwise.

All of this comes under the realm of UNIQUE PROPRIETARY PERSONAL INFORMATION that belongs to each of us, just like a trade secret does to a business!

I believe we have every right to keep our personal info PRIVATE, as it does indeed HAVE MARKET VALUE! By allowing everyone and anyone to access this info, means they are DEVALUING our personal information and turning it into a commodity to be traded and USED AGAINST US, should the need arise.

Instead we should be CHARGING someone every single time they access our info, and they can do that ONLY if we give them EXPRESS permission, not just clicking OK on a long list of Terms of Service, that never gets read.

If we CHARGED for every use of our personal info, you'd soon see a BIG Difference in how much gets STORED by corporations and the gov't.

In fact, we also need to charge for STORING our info for any length of time. It's like renting a car, you keep it for awhile, use it to your own advantage then return it, you STILL MUST PAY FOR the time you have it.

I think by PUTTING A VALUE on our personal information, just like a BUSINESS does, will put everyone one of us on EQUAL footing with businesses who legally get to keep their financial and proprietary info secret, but presently we can't!

If Congress is incapable of stopping these attacks on privacy, we are going to have to start BILLING EVERYONE WHO HAS OUR INFORMATION without our permission!

Imagine if everyone SUED GOOGLE for the proprietary browsing information they keep on us. Oh say maybe US$100 a month for that right. Multiply that by how many months Google keeps us in their computers, and Google would have stop doing it immediately or they would be bankrupt.

After all it is OUR BROWSING HISTORIES, and what they do with them, that gives Google such an edge over their rivals and make that company worth what it is.

So until we DEMAND payment for our personal information businesses and the Gov't will continue to ABUSE what is OURS, PROFITING off what belongs to us, often without our permission.

Yes, we must all accept the TOS, but if the TOS deprives us of our right to privacy, then it is ILLEGAL or should be.

What do you think? Should we start a movement to make businesses PAY for our personal information?

I've started a new thread with this post, so you needn't respond here to keep this thread on topic.

I'm just using them as an example. Actually I have great respect for google.

But it's Big Brother step-by-step creeping further into our lives, able to see EVERYTHING we do online, on the phone, in the marketplace, in the doctor's office, even in the streets that sends chills down my spine.

The real problem is Big Brother is now anyone who has access to this. And as the BUSHIT administration continues to remove any checks on this access, we should all be worried. VERY WORRIED!

In fact, it's time to take action!

There have been rumours for years that Google is closely associated with TIA, the Total Information Awareness project from DARPA. They say this project has been dismantled, but all they've really done is rename it to make it sound less threatening. Bet your bottom dollar, this beast lives on.

I understand Skip, and I am also frightened of the expanding scope of federal powers over our personal information.

But you have to consider that Google and other similiar sites offer a free service, one with which they are trying to make a profit, and they do that by selling their data to marketing firms, etc..

In the beginning their Eula stated that personal information was not given out only stats according to traffic and interests. And they fought the feds over releasing their data for surveillance.

I am sure those times have changed, but whenever you use a free service you need to consider that eventually there's a tradeoff.

I am more careful than ever now than ever.

You know Skip I've picked up more keylogger scripts here at HipFormums then anywhere else. I know how to clean them so no problem, I also know how to spot them, but many of the users here don't. I really think those of here at Hipforums are being are being infilitrated by the administration. I think many of the hyper conservative posts are plants.

I've noticed you database goes down on a pretty frequent basis....this is not to say you are compliant, only that they are certainly watching and listening.
