alright i just installed a new hard drive on my laptop (60 gig), and i installed windows and everything on it fine...
when i tried to change the resolution though, it wouldnt let me get past 680 x 460 or something...
when i looked online, it said something about making sure the right monitor was installed...
appearently, all i have is "default monitor" on my laptop, and on the website it said to go under properties (from display, settings, advanced, monitor tab), but i'm not even able to press it...

does anybody know any other ways to do this?

Have you installed all the mfg's (non microsoft) proper drivers or the laptop?

Many mfg's websites have a section for driver downloads.

Laptops can be picky beasts compared to desktops...

Which operating system is it, I'm gonna assume it windows

Thats a classic case of either the drivers for the graphics card not loaded
or a driver conflicting with it
All you do is right click "my computer"
    select hardware
    select device manager
then look down the list for any with a ! sign on a yellow triangle
right click it and opt to update it - either choose the update
off the cdrom that you installed windows with
    or from mcrosoft update
or find out which driver you need
and look 4 it on the net - or get a cdrom that came with the laptop
