I remember the first time I ever heard anything by Nirvana. I was driving my girlfriend to her car-hopping (Waitress on rollerskates) job.

Teen Spirit started playing on the radio and after about 30 seconds of the listening to the most irratating talentless shitstorm of sound, I lunged for the off button. The girlfriend protested and a mini-argument ensued.

I hated that music, mainly because of the instruments and vocals they used but I resented the message as well - who the fuck does this guy thinks he is? Screaming this kind of 'teen angst' and formulated outrage in my in my car? Its insulting to me..

..after all, I lived in a friends garage, had no job, was racked with back pain and had a van that barely ran more than a block at a time. Just the thought of this rich Nirvana guy screaming his rehearsed outrage to a bunch of gullible teens (never mind in my face)... just pisses me off. I hate phonies who sell kids on shit they dont need!

Anyway, as you know Kurt Cobain was presumably so distraught over his life of wealth. fame and worship that he pulled off one of the most cowardly and offensive acts ever seen. Suicide.

This asshole made a baby girl and then decides to leave it fatherless?

He used a shotgun so he could leave his exploded head for his friends to find?

    What a selfish asshole.

But wait there is more to his crime of assholiness even after his death....

A few months later and I was able to find a summer job painting at a storage facility. I must have painted two kilometres of blue racing stripes for minimum wage and was happy to do it. Unlike Kurt, I was thankful to have a job even if it wasnt a million to play music for less than one hour.

My boss that summer was Wally, a big man with an even bigger heart. Sadly it was also a weak heart and hence the reason I was hired to take care of the physically straining work.

Honestly I Never saw Wally without a smile ..well .. back to that later.

After work I would hang out at that drive-in restaurant where my girlfriend worked. One night this car pulls in.....ok, lots of cars did but this beaten up old car full of teens pulled in through the exit catching my attention. Sheri rolled her eyes at them saying something about 'potheads'. I joked it was because they were Easterners based on their licence plate

I kept a curious eye on them as Sheri went out to take their order. I saw three of them and a lot of backpacks and blankets etc. They were beyond just 'fashionably grungy' with all three sporting the Kurt Cobain look and hairstyles. It was kinda funny at the time (I thought) to see three Cobain wannabe's like that in one car.

When she returned (after quite a while), I asked if they were giving her some kind of trouble? "Not at all" she said " In fact were really nice and very polite young guys"! She thought they looked a bit stoned, either that or really tired.

She relayed her conversation with them - they said they had come down from Quebec across the US border and then all the way West to Seattle, where they had attended a memorial of some kind to Kurt Cobain. They mentioned visiting his house (Where he killed himself). When she asked when they were planning on going back home they seemed strangley ambiguous about it.

As she told me their story, one of them came in and cupping a pile of change in both hands, mostly pennies, he politely asked Sheri what was the 'most food' he could get with this much? He looked so young and grungy but was so respectful and polite that he left a lasting impression on me. She told him he could wait in his car and she would do her best. He carefully poured change into her hands and I watched as she counted out just less than two dollars in change and tried to calculate the most burger for the buck. I volunteered to chip in some change but she said not to worry - she reached into her own tips to round it up to 2 burgers which she promptly double wrapped, bagged with serviettes, condiments and three large waters to go. Again the guys couldnt have been more polite and friendly.

'Nice guys' She commented as they drove off to our waves. They really were.

Three days later. I had already finished my job at the storage facility and said my goodbyes to good ol Wally. I remember him smiling and giving me a little extra cash before driving off in his little golf cart. I will never forget something else too. Something, I didnt know what.. just smelled horrid. I mean a 'rotting meat' smell. It was the smell of evil.

I wasnt there when Wally came across that evil smell. It was coming from one of the larger storage lockers. Wally assumed the last renters had left food behind to rot but being unable to contact them he took the master key and opened the locker himself.

The waft of of the evil smell that rushed out the door literaly almost knocked Wally over! Lifting the large metal doors up, he first see's a beat up little car parked sideways into the storage locker - Then as the light floods the room he see's something no one should ever see - the dead bloated lifeless bodies of three young men sitting inside the car!

Do you know what Wally's first instinct was - He ran in and tried to rescue them. He tried to pull em out. He knew they had to be dead but his instinct was to try and pull those kids to safety anyway.

Later he said that as he opened the car door, the stench was so vile..so evil.. that he was almost incapacitated by it and fighting to not fall over and vomit uncontrollably.

They had been dead for three days.

Seems they pulled the car into the locker one night, shared some hamburgers. popped in a Nirvana tape and then, with the storage bay door closed, started up the car and said goodbye in a cloud of carbon monoxide.

Wally would talk about these papers they were holding. We found out later they were suicide note/Kurt Cobain tributes. We heard that the ONLY tape found was a Nirvana tape. Think about that. 10,000 Km's and One tape!

Wally had a heart of gold and needed three months off, for both his heart and his soul. We all knew that he was the type who took things to heart. The cost of being a caring person I guess.

    Kurt Cobain you fucking asshole!

You knew how the kids hung on your every word. You saw them dressed like you and following your every move. Its bad enough you exploited their weak minds for your financial gain but you had to know full well that at least some would copy your death.

They dress like you and lived like you so what the fuck did you think would happen? Of course some would die like you!

You fucker - all you had to do was have enough 'last minute' sense to include some 'warning' to those weak minded teens -[who's money, by the way paid for the shotgun and heroin you used]

Just one line in you suicide note .. "Dont follow my way" or some indication of shame. No ,you couldnt do that even you selfish asshole!

Now here is what pisses me off in addition to Cobain's act of stupidity - Media Yuppee's who felt the need to knee-jerk a modern day spin on their own era's pop-culture.

Its like they are doing a service to 'Generation X' by writing story after article after headline affirming Kurt Cobain as 'The voice of a generation' or 'This generations John Lennon'. 'The Gen-X Jimi Hendrix"

Fuck off Newseek magazine! You've put that asshole on the cover twice now and once was too much!

Why dont you put the bodies of those three dead kids on the cover instead?!

Where is the frontpage for Sheri, who bought them extra food from her tips just because they were hungry?!

Where is the bloody frontpage for Wally?!

I keep thinking of him trying to get them out of the car.

He tried to get them out to safety even after it was too late

Now then...What the fuck did Kurt Cobain ever do for them?

    R.I.P. Cobain, you asshole!

yes there will always be copy cat suicides wen i celebrity kills themselves. but kurt had bought the gun for protection. it was loaded with three rounds. who loads three rounds for one shot. and we've all heard that he had enough herion in him to kill him instantly anyway. so he didn't really kill himself did he. i'm going now but i'll be back to finish this

bah! Now you'll start with all the consirecy bullshit... the idiot shot himself.

Brocktoon, beautifuly written. I agree, yet, I remember myself in my "teen angst" days, young, depressed (For good reasons), innocent mentaly. I connected with Nirvana's music, Kurt's messages. They helped me, like they helped alot of teenagers at the time.

I agree, Kurt was an asshole, he did not deny it, people loved him for it. Right now, when I look at his message "hate the world, it hates you", I cannot disagree more, but, back in the day, I connected with it.

The three kids, I agree, terrible, but, it is also thier responsability, and thier parent's to make sure they don't fanaticly attach themselves to anything. I know that I was a smart chap, I knew my borders, I cried when Kurt commited suicide, I was young, a boy...

If you blame someone, blame the media, they apotheosised him, made him a God. I agree, he shouldn't be called the voice of the generation, but at the same time, he was, for many.

The media threw itself on him, the perfect target, and he himself loved it, he loved fame. He was an asshole, and being one won him money. The media cought up to him, it made them a profit, this world, in its capitalistic sense, is indeed about catching the best specimen, and making a profit off it. Kurt made a profit off being himself, and the media made a profit off Kurt being himself. His suicide alone made so much people so much money. They are negative consequences indeed, Kurt was an asshole, yet people, even teens, should know better than to emotionaly attach themselves so much to someone. They picked an idol... thier god died.

Thanks SirRubin,,, I didn't expect to get such a thoughtful reply so quickly.

The truth is - I wrote that out of an indignent sense of anger and outrage.
If you ask me now, I would feel a lot of pity for Cobain.

The situation sure as hell makes a person raw and sober and full of rage.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out his insane wife really did have him killed but the outrage I had was more for the teens, the irresponsible media and seeing Wally broken in two.

    Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, the media plays a huge role in encouraging or discouraging copycat suicides. Often times the act is glamorized by the media and easily-influenced or depressed people follow suit.
There wasn't even a murder investigation for Kurt's death. They immediately presumed suicide.
It makes me sick to think he might have been murdered. His music is amazing.

    Consider this..

I write and report news breaks for my station. We use the exact same ethical standards as any radio, television or newspapers - which is - you do not report suicides.

Most people do not realise this is standard practice.

The thing with Cobain is - the media KNEW this would cause 'Copycat' deaths, yet, they happily flooded the audience with nothing but news of it... and.. presented it in a 'How Unique' way.

The deaths of these teens was not reported by any local papers.
    Why?
Because they probably realised they shouldnt have reported (or at least Blitzed) the first suicide in the first place.

    Meeehhhh.. Im so grumpy sometimes.

he wasn't born into wealth, yah stupid ass. he lived poor, he struggled. he lived under a fucking bridge while he was still a teenager, for fuck's sake.

i don't get why every arrogant asshole has to start their own "i hate kurt cobain" thread, just because they don't like his music. pffft, fucking get over yourself.

He was poor and homeless, and wrote alot of the songs from Bleach and Nevermind while he was like this, if you listen to In Utero its alot different. But I'd like to correct you he didn't live under a bridge he made that up. The fact is the water by the Whiskah river was to high and rapid to live under the bridge. But kids did gather to do drugs there.

And you want to know why he commited suicide besides the fact he was bipolar(Yeah, I guess it's come to the point were hippies have to attack people with diseases) it was to become immortal. And he achieved that he will never be forgotten.

Kurt was not a phony! Guess what? Poor kids to drugs, bipolar is a disease where you become very depressed and causes alot of people to kill themselves. I'm sure Kurt liked success, but he was embarrassed to go out.

Yeah is ashame that there are incredibly stupid kids out there that would kill themselfs cause Kurt did, but if there that stupid good riddance. In my oppinion the human race is discusting anyway.

And perhaps the media killed Kurt Cobain.. Know what Kurt read in the news paper before he killed himself? The rape and murder of a little girl.. He had so much empathy what makes you think thats not why he killed himself?

    Writers and reporters are assholes.

wow, okay. i didn't know that was made up. haha, my bad.

i agree with you that the human race is disgusting. people are truly just like a disease.

if kurt did kill himself, i'm not sure which theory i believe, but if he did it was probably because he was bi-polar. like you said. so, he can't really be blamed for that. that's a serious mental disease that has nothing to do with being selfish.

and the thing about the rape. i believe i read an interview with kurt where he said that the guys that did it to her, sang the words to 'polly' as they did it. sick fucks. :(

I totally agree. I just dunno se him as this disgusting thing.
Somehow I believe that your rock music , at least the mainstream part of it, is shit nowadays with very few exceptions.
I don't remember any female singer with the same power and emotion Janis had for instance. The lyrics are just too obvious and all of the MTV bands seems to just keep on following the next seasons' clothes as if fads were really all that matters.
It's just so incredible how any idiot stating he's or she's an idiot is succesfull doing this in your country...in my country it comes to the sex thing...any girl with a big butt or big tits and any guy shaking their butts with a new Bahia rythm is welcome.
I don't know what is going on with the music all around the world, all the gets here is just so not good.(with exceptions, of course)
Nirvana and Kurt are meaningless in my life and it should be in yours Brocktoon, just an advice...

Well, he was more artistic than other mainstream music stars of the time. Nirvana was more interesting than any mainstream rock acts since then really. They are not my favorite by any means, but their music was pretty tough, and had a unique sound to it.

So what if he killed himself, why is that your business. if you killed yourself i wouldn't be saying things like "what an asshole,he killed himself," more likely it would be "He must have been really troubled."

He rocked and he died, doesn't make him an asshole.

as cruel as this sounds, kurt cobain killing himself was the best move he ever made. i mean, its never a good move to kill yourself, but as far as record sales and whatnot, nothing helped more than his death. no chance to "sell out" to most people (even though i think he sold out long before his death).

brocktoon, you talk fucking shite. no offence, well actually lots of offence, open your goddamn ears and listen to the music in context of the generation it was written for. there is more to the music and lyrics than you are giving kurt cobain credit for. you are showing your small mindedness and ignorance.

(you also know nothing about suicide either. think it fucking through you fool. your life fortunately isn't everybodies life and people see things differently)

i would wish you peace but i don't want to,

p.s. when you have finished writing a song that is better than anything nirvana produced please share it with us.

good point.[IMG] Even if he encouraged the death of some, he brought joy to many more and that more than makes up for it.
