Wonder about the consequences too. How will iraqi government respond, respect such a referendum? Or other local groups in the region. And last but not least, how will other Kurds in north eastern Syria and south east Turkey respond. They're striving for more autonomy and rights for themselves too. But since no nation as far as i know is supporting the creation of an independent kurdish state I doubt there will officially be one after such a referendum. It's not Israel :p

Is this happening in another galaxy?

    The World is too small.

    Must go into space.

They've been striving for more autonomy and independancy for years.

Yeah, if they get a YES, I don't see the Iraqi government just letting it happen peacefully.
The article says it's binding, but I don't know how realistic it is. At least for now.

I can't imagine both sides focusing most of their resources on fighting each other atm (and I am sure fighting will happen, if Iraqi Kurds do go for an independent state), with ISIS being close there too.
Not that the government and Kurds are not fighting already.

On the other hand, there might not be a better moment than now.
Yeah, ISIS is still there, but both the government and Kurds have been doing a great job in freeing (parts of) Iraq.
If they don't seize the moment and the chaos (and the success they had in fighting ISIS), the government might take hold of their territory again.

I suppose we shall see in two weeks.

Although the idea of independence seems advantageous and self autonomy a more than tempting desire, one must always be mindful of the old adage "Be careful what you wish for..."

I am thinking about peaceful disintegration.

I can't remember many examples, other than Czechoslovakia in 1993

There is always a danger of Independence being coupled with isolation - (I guess that's perhaps the Mr. 'worst case scenario' coming out in me)

Wasn't this basically one of Wilson's 14 points--that nations should be united in culture, and not defined by borders?

Which is interesting considering he was president of the most diverse nation on earth...

That's not going to happen. Too idealistic.

Shit happens when you remove borders.

    Let borders stay.
    They're nice.
