I'm Korean American from the state of Virginia. I think asians for a long time has been the invisible minority in America. Although Virginia has a very large Korean population it is not really intregrated into the public at large. But after the Tech massacre this will soon have to change. I want to know honestly what you think of Koreans?

I honestly think that the fact that the killer is korean has nothing to do with it. He was obviously insane in same way that other mass muderers are, but public perception is another thing and more powerful than body of evidence.

Yes, he was. But much much worse.... I could go on about how much I hate this person, but it pains me just think about it.

Virginia a sweet southern state, but it's still the South and has it's prejudices. I hate to think I live in a state that hates me.

We were talking about this earlier today. I've had a lot of interaction with Asians over the years, including being married to one (my ex was Vietnamese).

Although I have admiration for some aspects of Asian culture, as well as having a degree in Chinese Studies, one general aspect of Asian culture really stands out-most Asians, due to certain deeply engrained cultural norms, are basically introverts, and find it hard to really express their feelings, desires, etc. This guy was obviously an extreme example, and certainly not representative of the behavior of most Asians. However, there is defintely a danger in not being able to express oneself and be open about your inner feelings.

My ex was another example. She pretended to be happy, never admitted being really unhappy with me or our marriage, then abruptly ran off and caused an enormous amount of problems for us that could have totally been avoided if she had just opened up and talked about what was bugging her.

In fact, in traditional Confucian cultures, individual expression is always subservient to the members of the hierarchy that is above you (parents, etc.,) and what you want to do with your life (career, future spouse, etc.) really isn't seen as primarily your business-these are decisions your parents make for you, and their parents for them. The whole culture discourages individual thought and expression, and tends to make people introverted. Of course, that's a generalization, although a valid one. It doesn't mean everybody turns into a mass murderer that's inculturated that way, but I still don't think that it's a healthy thing.

The Perp had Ismail Ax written on his arm in red ink when they discovered his body, perhaps in reference to The Asian Excellence Awards (AXA) [IMG]

Charles Joseph Whitman (June 24, 1941August 1, 1966) was a student at the University of Texas at Austin and a Marine, who is known for having ascended The University's 27-story tower on August 1, 1966, and shooting passersby in the city and on the campus below, after having killed his mother and his wife the night before. In all Whitman killed 15 people and wounded 31 others before he was shot dead by Austin police

His autopsy also revealed that he had a previously undiagnosed brain tumor, which was the obvious cause of his deranged behavior.

I lived in Korea for 7 years. I speak, read and write Korean fluently. I was married to a native Korean woman and have two half Korean children. I love and miss Korea every day. If Korean people in the US WANTED to be integrated into mainstream society (outside of the south) they would be. But they cloister themselves EVERYWHERE. They prefer to be apart and claim it is for their own safety and the preservation of their culture. They have their own churches, social organizations, commerce districts, they buildugly strip malls and only rent to Korean businesses. White America is perhaps only indirectly responsible for this.

And what does southern racism (something which obviously exists) have to do with the VTech Massacre? Please draw me a correlation.

I live in the Houston area, which now has a large Asian population. I have seen virtually no evidence of discrimination against them. Asians are prominent in every aspect of the economy and academics, and frequently intermarry with non-Asians.

Whatever the cause was of this tragedy, I highly doubt that racism had anything to do with it.

    Koreans have small penises.

Point being: This thread is pointlessly silly. "Opinion" of American-Koreans? What the fuck?

hate to break it to you but Asian people are a visible minority in north america. now admittedly most of us cant tell the difference between someone from Korea and someone from China, but, still classed as a visible minority no tinvisible.

anyway. i could give a fuck where someone is from. ill admit that i had issues with my chinese bf way back when we were dating because he would never stand up to his parents (very reasonable people who he could easily have discussed thigns with in a reasonable, clam manner and gotten different results). they were born in China, he was born here, but it seemed like the respect-your-elders thing prevented him from discussing stuff with them or standing up to them. eh, we arent dating anymore so, not my problem anymore. thtas pretty much the only major difference ive ever seen in any of my asian friends/bfs/acquaintances/whatever is there seems to be a higher rate of the respect-your-elders thing to the point where it can interefere with normal norht american life

so far as i've experience with various asian ethnicities, well, i've gone to school with kids for years and years and years and never spoken more than a few words with them. i don't mind, i figure, live and let live. but i could tell when i wasn't welcome or wanted. my father worked for a korean shipping company for 20+years, hanjin container lines. we went to the company picnics every year. never were we welcome, and never was a white guy made manager. ever. them's the breaks. people do what people are comfortable doing.
