The cabin is in a remote corner of Canyonlands Nat'l Park in Utah. It looks so poignant, sitting alone there in the canyon, so insignificant amongst the cliffs. At the time old Kirk (whoever he was) built it in the early 1900's, it would have taken literally weeks to get there from the nearest civilization, to haul in supplies or whatever. There's no route into the canyon itself, access is by foot only. To bring in significant amounts of supplies, he had to disassemble his wagon, carry it and the supplies down the cliffs piece by piece, and then reassemble it.

What do you suppose could motivate someone to live that far removed from humanity? This was long before the uranium-mining boom in that country, and there's no obvious economic motive for living there.

The photo above is the actual cabin, by the way. The low cliffs you see behind the cabin are inside the main walls of the canyon, which isn't shown.

I've been there. Hiked down Salt Creek Canyon past the cabin, all the way to Angel Arch in one long day, camped there and hiked back the next. That's some damn good country, there. And did you see the All-American Man pictograph, Caliente?

To answer your question, damned if I know why the old sumbitch lived out there. But he picked a hell of a spot. Great view. Plenty of water from the creek. No freeway noise. Hey, you don't suppose that cabin is for rent?

And may I offer a slight correction? There is a wagon route into the canyon from its mouth at the northern end (the hiking trail comes in from the southern end). There are two small falls on the creek downstream of the cabin, however, and that's where Kirk had to disassemble his wagon.

Oh ok! Thanks for the info :)

Sure did. It took a while to find it, though. It's amazing how those colors have lasted for 700 years.
