"Man you should've seen them kickin Edgar Allen Poe" - I am the Walrus Hey I figured I'd start a little thread dedicated to the mastre of macabre, the guru of gore, the psultan of psychosis. But since we're all tired of hearing about Michael Jackson, I guess we can talk about E.A.P. instead. Yuk yuk.
He was definately the fucking man. Poe and Lovecraft (I'm assuming you know who lovecraft was) are my favorite authors. I'm surprised at how many people have never heard of Eureka though. I think that it's his best work without a doubt. Absolutely brilliant.
Embarrassed to admit I've only read 2 Lovecraft stories: "The Dunwich Horror" & "Rats in the Walls" (aMAYZing). I like that whole late-19th / early-20th century horror style. I love it especially when they mix it with dark humor. EAP was great at that. Ever read "Never Bet the Devil Your Head"? lmao
I haven't read that actually. If you have the time be sure to read these stories by Lovecraft. They are in my opinion a few of his best. The Colour out of Space The Shadow out of Time The Mountains of Madness If you liked the two that you mentioned, then you should be blown away by those that I mentioned above.
Poe is absolutely my favorite poet and short story author. What irritates me, though, is that nobody knows about his humor or fantasy stuff. Everyone, of course, thinks of "The Raven" and "The Fall of the House of Usher. " But nobody ever thinks of "Lionizing" (one of my favorites) or "The Oval Portrait," although I do admit that I enjoy "Hop-frog" quite a bit. Sad to say that I've never read any lovecraft. Will make note to get around to that at some point. Question: do you guys enjoy his poems or his stories better?
"Lionizing" ...is that the one where someone's nose gets cut off (in a funny way)? I'll have to dig out my old Poe and re-read. You're right, it's too bad Poe is only known for his twisted stuff (which is great, by the way), because he was talented all around. Another good comedy is "The Spectacles". I won't say why, because it'll ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it. But it has a hilarious ending. It's a 19th century version of what we call 'beer goggles'! I vote stories. He has such a good command of prose, I like to hear it straight, without the distractions of meter & rhyme. But I've only read 2 of his poems: "The Raven" (of course) and "Annabelle Lee". Care to suggest any others I should try?
Another good book to get (if you can find it) is The Unknown Poe. It is a collection of poetry that he wrote as a teenager, along with letters and essays that he wrote when he was older. I especially enjoyed the essays.
Oh I love the Oval Portrait very much. I love Poe, he was a genius. His poetry was so beautifuly morbid, and he as a person was so interesting. I love his short stories, and he really knew how to craft his poems just right. I love the poem "Alone," that is my favorite poem from him
I want that badly...I have a huge book of his complete works. His poetry and short stories and a small biography. The book is around 1080 pages.
Oooohhh...I'll have to look for that. Random: my friend has an EAP book of selected stories that are illustrated. Hopfrog is in there...I especially love that one's illustrations.
Wo yeah, the illustrated versions are so cool, especially the ones illustrated by Harry Clarke. I don't know who did this one, but can anyone guess what story it's from?
