Kei cars are cars in japan that have to be (around) 5 feet by 10 feet, max.

People in japan get tax ,insuarance, and a few other benifits from thse cars.

Most newer Kei cars have 660cc 3 cylinder.

These little cars have a few interesting options such as AWD, and Turbo/Intercooler. I find it odd a car with such a small engine with AWD or a turbo, here you only find things like that on larger cars, with large engines. The cars small size helps it be fuel efficent, easy handling, and just cute!

    Most Kei's get between 4 to 6L/100km(50-75MPG)

My question is..why aren't they here?
    ??????????????????
Kei cars have been around a long time!

cars can be imported into Canada after 15 years with only a safety check (and some other stupid border crap)

tell what you think of keis!

I'll tell you why they aren't in America... They don't meet our crash test ratings.

they tried to bring these cars to america and they were allowed, just nobody bought them. americas consumer culture deemed these as "bad".

They do sell them here but cant be licensed for the street as they do not meet crash test standards. Its a car and a coffin at the same time, I guess it saves that way too.

You see Smart cars (Models up to 65 mpg) all over Europe. They can be licensed on American roads. Here's a pic! Also, thought you might enjoy this gas gage.[IMG]

I see how then poor drivers in them Honda Prius get tossed when I blow past them on the interstate with my truck, man I would assume them micro cars would blow off the road or get sucked up under us. :S

4-6 L/100 km is 39-59 mpg US (and 47 to 71 mpg Imperial)

there is a similar thing on sale here, the G-wizz electric car..

the environmntal benefits are sketchy (those batteries are full of some pretty nasty stuff, and dont last long) but they failed crash tests, dramaticly.

one independant body crash tested one, and pleaded with people not to buy them - they are lethal.

how did they get around this problem? the invented a new class for them, they are no longer cars, but 'quadracycles' and dont have any crash requirments to meet.

but they serve no purpouse. a motorcycle will cary 2 people, and with a 125cc model, can return 120 mpg. with a decent over suit you dont get wet, and release a tiny fraction of the pollution to produce, compaired to even a kei car.

keep you existing car (its already released the bulk of its pollution in manufacture) and use a motorcycle for commuting and personal transport. i've been using this policy for a long time, and despite doing 25,000 miles a year, and my car being a ford mustang, my monthly fuel bill is less than my neighbour with a honda civic who does far fewer miles than me.

lets not even start to consider the urban congestion benefits of motorcycles, they take up a lot less room than even the smallest cars, and dont have to wait in traffic queues, you just go right to the front.

I've ridden right through londond many times, in my car it takes about 45 mins, on the bike less than 20. even a kei car would take 45 mins. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that 45 mins with an economical engine running uses a lot more fuel than 20 mins with an even more economical engine running.
